Is it really only 9 degrees in Tenerife today?

DH and I went at Easter one year, half the week was warm, the other half was chilly, and we thought we’d just been unlucky. But that experience, plus the current weather forecast, makes me question if it’s really a winter sun destination?

Easter isn't winter?
the canaries are in the Atlantic and can be really windy but due to their position close to the equator average temperatures are pretty warm. Obviously with the way averages work, some weeks will be scorching and some chilly.

Last Friday it was 21. Looks to be similar for the rest of the week on my weather app

Fends · 20/01/2026 14:37

No. Who told you it was? 😵‍💫

It’s the weather app on my iPhone. So what’s the temperature really?

Oh, my photo has been censored. I promise it’s a weather forecast and not a Willy.

Winter Sun surely just means sunny in winter? You have to go long haul if you want hot sun in the winter months.

Overthebow · 20/01/2026 14:51

That’s go the whole of Tenerife though, where’s the monitor located? If you look at the weather at Playa de las Americas for example today it’s showing as 18.

ghostyslovesheets · 20/01/2026 14:51

This is the forecast on my phone - are you looking at the coast? It might be that cold in the mountains but not the sea bits!

Tenerife is a huge mountain, at the top of the mountain it’s cold all year round, and that’s probably where their weather station for “Tenerife” is (also north is much colder then south).

Try searching the coastal towns in the south, eg Adeje, Playa de las Americas - you’ll find a much warmer forecast.

18C is not exactly hot enough for a beach holiday IMO
I usually go this time of year and normally you can expect warm sunny days in the low 20s but need a fleece at night. The odd bit of rain and cloud but not all day.

It's been a particularly poor winter in the canaries. Lanzarote is green in a way I've never seen it before because so much rain. Night time temperatures well below the norm.

It’s quite cool in the canaries currently, not sunbathing weather, but lovely sat on a lounger with your book in trousers, top and light cardigan according to my mum who is currently there

BoarBrush · 20/01/2026 15:16

Our friends spend the winter in Los cristianos, spoke to him a couple hours ago and he said it was 20 then.

That sounds wonderful! Hope she's having a lovely time

If you’re planning on holidaying at the top of Teide then yeah it’ll be cool 🤣

Here ATM its in the low 20's with blue sky and gentle breeze.

I am in lanzarote right now.

The sea is about 20 degrees

it’s warm enough that I’m sunbathing on the beach in my swimsuit and I’ve just been for a dip in the sea. Maybe 20 ish?

Thanks everyone, I do wonder where Apple Weather are taking their readings!

We are considering a Christmas cruise to the Canaries and would be perfectly happy with the weather described by previous posters on this thread (whilst realising it’s not guaranteed), but if 7/8/9 degrees is the norm for this time of year then we’d think again!
