We are looking to go away during term time this year (for the first time in decades) and were thinking the first week or two in September maybe?

Can anyone recommend somewhere that's got some nice places to stroll around-rivers, churches, markets, hills etc, not hours and hours on the plane and quite cheap to eat/accommodation?

Malaga. It’s got heaps of culture: Picasso museum, flamenco, pretty indoor market hall, hilltop castle, historic centre, cathedral, botanic garden, beach, plus loads of day trips like Ronda, Nerja and the Alhambra in Granada.

Seville, Malaga, Sarlat or Les Eyzies in the Dordogne (would need a car). Monopoli, Otranto, Lecce in Puglia. Matera. Taormina and Ortigia in Sicily.

I went to Ostia Lido on the coast near Rome. It was a great place, lovely beaches, lots of beach bars, a lively town centre with lots of great restaurants for every taste and budget, a market, and a train station! I really liked it there and we took the short train trip into Rome itself on a few of our days away. Just a few minutes away from the Lido by train is Ostia Antica, an absolutely amazing Roman site on a par with Pompeii but without the crowds.

The accommodation along the seafront in Lido was so much cheaper than Rome itself, and lots of people stay there for the duration and take the train into Rome on some of the days, it takes 30 minutes direct to Porta San Paolo station which is also a metro station. A one day transport pass from Ostia Lido was 9 euro or close to that, and covered all modes into and around Rome.

I loved the mix of frenzy and sightseeing in Rome itself, followed by a few days R+R by the sea plus the visit to the Roman ruins. Just an idea.

I can second Malaga, we went 1st week of Jan and even then it was warm enough!
Also Albufeira, Portugal. Lots to do and getting around is easy.

Not necessarily cheap but northern Italy is still decently warm
