Dog phobia in Sri Lanka / Vietnam

I’m keen to book a more adventurous holiday for us and have enjoyed reading planning threads for both Sri Lanka and Vietnam.

DD (15) is really scared of dogs. For those who have been to these places, are there lots of dogs roaming about streets / beaches? Would it be miserable for someone phobic of dogs?

I dont recall seeing any in Vietnam! I would usually remember this. I guess it would depend on where abouts you go. Please visit hoi an if you chose Vietnam. Its amazing

Not many dogs in Vietnam, far less than uk.

Didn’t see many in Vietnam. A few strays in Sri Lanka, but they never bothered us.

The street dogs in Sri Lanka were often in poor condition. The dogs in Vietnam were owned calm and in good condition but not wandering freely but close to home. In the main cities they weren’t free at all. I’d say that Vietnam doesn’t have a street dog problem.

Seeing dogs in Vietnam is expected!

Just back from Sri Lanka. There are a lot of stray dogs. I never felt afraid but driver did confirm some of them can be problematic in rural areas. Would be enough to put me off an early morning beach walk on my own but otherwise they just seem to ignore people.

Wouldn’t let it put me off as it’s an amazing place to visit.

I do love Sri Lanka but there are lots of stray dogs, some obviously rabid.

I stayed on a beautiful beach but at least once a day a pack of dogs would race the length of the beach and swarm around anything and everything looking for food.

I was there for an extended period and made friends with locals who took me on walks around the area, but never without a huge great big stick for the dogs.

We saw loads of dogs in Vietnam, especially in Hanoi. Most were tiny and in little T shirts to identify them as pets rather than street dogs. (They do get eaten).

They are far less obvious than eg Istanbul where the dogs are large, but they were definitely there. We like dogs so it was a plus for us, but maybe not for your DD.

I was worried before we went to Sri Lanka. There are loads of dogs but they seemed very docile and were not interested in us at all. There weren’t any Rottweiler/ pit bull types.
