Japan in October - Ideas please !

Looking at trying to do a 2 week holiday in October with my Dh and 22 year old sons to Japan. Its a big once in a lifetime holiday so keen to get the most out of it. Should we use an agent such as Trailfinders, should we book everything independently ?

Any ideas on best places to fit in to 2 weeks, wnat to experience Tokyo plus typical Japan locations and of course a bullet train.

What kind of budget do you think for 4 of us travelling economy and staying in nice places maybe 4 star hotels but want to book some authentic places to stay too.

There are two long running and very informative Japan threads here Part 1 and Part 2 which have loads of information for you to get started.

Most of us have booked and travelled independently, a few of us a couple of times and @Takoneko is planning her 4th and 5th trips I think. So in general we will mostly say there is no need to pay Trailfinders etc.

Two weeks offers you a lot of options and it depends what you want from your holiday and how you want to do it, many go for Tokyo/Osaka/Kyoto on a first trip but some of us have branched out to more rural and less touristy areas and really enjoyed it.
