I’m looking for an underseat backpack 40x30x20cm - essential criteria is that the shoulder straps are comfortable and don’t dig in!

I borrowed one from DC and honestly the straps dug in and made it very uncomfortable to wear. I think the padded section was way too short.

If you search on Amazon for a Ryanair cabin bag you can get one but make sure you get it with the cross body strap. I think DD wore hers without as a backpack just fine.

I have the passenger one that folds open like a suitcase. It fits the size and is super comfy to wear

I got a bag from Aerolite, they do all the different dimensions. I needed it for Ryanair. Opens sideways like a suitcase. Brilliant and wasn't too expensive... Husband has now nicked it for work travel.

CabinZero. We all have one in my family and you can get so much into them. Different sizes and styles are available but we have the 28L Classic.

I have an American Tourister. It is effectively like a very small suitcase and has good capacity and outside pockets. It can also stack onto the handles of my overhead case.

Have a look at Cabinmax.

I second the recommendation for American Tourister. As a family we each have two, one for Ryanair and a slightly larger one for Easyjet. The brand is owned by Samsonite so the quality is fantastic.

Cabin Zero. Excellent. Has laptop storage too. Comfy to wear.

I bought this last year and it’s been great, my 9yr old also has one, a friend has one as her work bag. We’ve all found it to be a very good bag, bonus the wide opening.

Im looking at these (available in different sizes for different airlines)

That’s what we have although we have the 50/40/20 version.

I don't really see how you could pack a bag that size so heavy that you'd need the cross body strap. Unless you were transporting gold bars.

Ohpleeeease · 16/01/2026 19:55

We use the Cabin Max Manhattan, fly about five or six times a year with both Ryanair and easyJet, never had an issue. The shoulder straps are wide and padded and there is also a long strap. One of the versions even has an external charging lead so you can plug in your phone for charging.

We bought ours from Amazon, they are often on sale.

MamaBobo · 16/01/2026 19:56

Another vote for Aerolite here….their stuff is really well made.

I think it’s more about distance it’s carried for.

GirlsAbroad · 22/01/2026 10:54

I hate when the shoulder straps are uncomfy! This one has full padded shoulder straps and I found it comfortable even when it was fully packed. Plus its quite spacious and opens like a suitcase so its easy to pack Ryanair cabin rucksack

TheFairyCaravan · 22/01/2026 11:00

We’ve got this one

MaybeNotBob · 22/01/2026 17:08

Also recommend Cabin Max. They also do a hybrid which you can use with the wheels.
