Family Holiday June avoiding scorching heat

CharlieChaplin99 · 13/01/2026 09:24

Looking at booking a holiday week away in June as a family with older teenagers. They are both pretty easy going, won’t mind where they go as long as we are paying and both will likely have a week away each with friends (before going back to Uni and starting work).

We are looking for either an AI or good half board hotel without needing to hire a car (so we can budget and so we all get some downtime). Ideally would like temps in early to mid 20’s max.

Wondering about Madeira (but heard its very hilly and concerned about the stereotype of older holiday makers), the Algarve (but not Albuferia), possibly Istria in Croatia (unsure of where to stay) or where else am I missing or could anyone recommend any hotels and areas that might work? Nothing too energetic a stomp to civilisation for reasons I don’t want to go into here.

Thanks

I might try Barcelona - could be just about beach weather, or chillier

CharlieChaplin99 · 13/01/2026 09:47

Thank you we once went to Barcelona in July the heat was absolutely stifling.

Also we don’t really want a city break high energy full on sightseeing holiday as DH isn’t in the best health. More about low key quality time and relaxation.

We stayed half board on Lake Garda and the dc loved it. It was easy to get to from the airport and there’s loads of public transport and ferries around the lake. The dc hired e-bikes, chilled in the pool, did a bit of paddle boarding and we spent a few days at the theme parks which were literally 10mins away. The food was fantastic, and overall the temperature never went higher than mid-20s (it helped that there was always a nice breeze).

concerned about the stereotype of older holiday makers

WTAF does that mean?!

Guttted · 13/01/2026 12:04

Are they sporty? We go to Club La Santa in Lanzarote - kids and DH try out loads of activities whilst I sit by the pool and spend time relaxing in the spa. They are so worn out at the end of the day and can choose all of their specific individual activities on-site each day so I don’t have to get involved. There are enough teenagers there if they want to socialise in the complex or there are surf villages near by with chilled out bars and restaurants with youngsters. Weather is always comfortable. Also lots of day trips if they want to explore the cultural / art side of the island.

We found the heat along the Adriatic too much in early June for the last 2 years, it was around 30, so we've moved holidays to May in the hope that it'll be cooler. 10 years ago, mid June was fine temperature wise!

Just to clarify. We are already older parents and our YP may not appreciate a holiday where everyone on holiday is older than them. As Madeira did have a reputation for attracting older holiday makers than many other places.

Always an arse on a thread…………….

Thank you appreciate your feedback. ChatGPT was saying to look at Istria but I thought it might be too hot.

Crete is fab and one of the last European sunny climates that are cheap to eat / supermarket etc

BIWI · 13/01/2026 12:20

I assume your comment about an arse was directed at me? Despite the fact that I’ve actually responded with a suggestion to you.

Your comment about age was too vague and suggested ageism, which is not on. You should have clarified what you meant.

What about Lake bled?

Owlmoonstar · 13/01/2026 12:21

Madeira has lost that stereotype now.

We went a few years ago. I was around 33 years old. It attracts alot of younger people now. We also took two kids with us.

If you want milder temps and a really nice hotel it does tick the boxes. Really pretty scenery there and nice for a change.

Where did you stay in Lake Garda please? Have visited before many many years ago.

We love Italy but with DS’s enormous appetite it will cost us a fortune eating out and I don’t want to be shopping, meal planning, cooking and tidying the kitchen on holiday.

There is a big difference in temp between the start and the end of June in the med.

Funchal. Absolutely not hilly in Funchal.

We didn't hire a car but we did excursions. They have a really good bus service too.

Branleuse · 13/01/2026 12:27

I think South of France would be lovely temperature in June.

snowsjoke · 13/01/2026 12:29

End of June in most Med countries will be very warm but maybe Brittany would have milder weather. . I’d look at Norway or the Scandi countries but not sure you’d get an AI experience there. Lots to do though and beautiful beaches.
Or what about the Channel Islands?

Indeed. One year we had a lovely holiday in Pula, apart from the last 2 days around the 29th June when the temperature soared from about 24 to 32! It totally wiped me out!

CharlieChaplin99 · 13/01/2026 12:40

Thanks we were thinking about mid June and want a very easy holiday.

Lake Como is lovely, I stayed in Lierna which is very low key, can swim in the lake (cold🥶) lovely little restaurants right there but you can take the train along the coast or the ferries. We did have transport and the apartment came with secure parking (motorcycle). If want a day out can take the train into Milan but we didn’t. Think chilled out quality time with little walks, sitting in the square rather than a hectic hotel. I didn’t cook at all as lovely places to eat

We stayed at Hotel Caesius Thermae & Spa

CharlieChaplin99 · 13/01/2026 13:03

Thanks that sounds idyllic for me and DH but with the amount our son eats the holiday budget would sky rocket
