Family Holiday June avoiding scorching heat

Looking at booking a holiday week away in June as a family with older teenagers. They are both pretty easy going, won’t mind where they go as long as we are paying and both will likely have a week away each with friends (before going back to Uni and starting work).

We are looking for either an AI or good half board hotel without needing to hire a car (so we can budget and so we all get some downtime). Ideally would like temps in early to mid 20’s max.

Wondering about Madeira (but heard its very hilly and concerned about the stereotype of older holiday makers), the Algarve (but not Albuferia), possibly Istria in Croatia (unsure of where to stay) or where else am I missing or could anyone recommend any hotels and areas that might work? Nothing too energetic a stomp to civilisation for reasons I don’t want to go into here.

Thanks

Holland. Its a short flight it you can take the ferry (we sailed overnight from Harwich to the Hook of Holland). It's very flat too so your DH will like it. The Hague is on the coast and has a similar climate to the UK.

Have you thought about Portugal? We stayed near Carvoeiro last summer with older teens and all loved it. If your teens want a night out Albufeira is only a €20 uber ride away as well (ds19 went to meet some friends one night)

Thanks yes have visited there and other places in Algarve when kids younger. Sadly Carvoeiro would be too hilly for DH these days and eating out for lunch and dinner with the amount of food they consume would blow the budget.

Istria - look at Valamar Isabella Island or any of the Valamar's around Porec.

Lake Annecy. Fly to Geneva. Stay in Annecy town which also has a beach and those of you more active can rent bike and cycle around the lake and explore.

If eating out is going to be too expensive, and you don’t want to be shopping and cooking (understandably!) then maybe a package holiday with AI would be better?

I think anywhere in Europe is expensive to eat out as a family when you have teenagers with healthy appetites…. Spain and Greece tend to be a bit cheaper but then they are likely to be too hot in summer. North West Europe is cooler but food tends to be more expensive.

We do self-catering for this reason as any meal out now tends to cost £100 - £150 so we can’t do it every night, but DH doesn’t mind shopping and cooking so it’s not so bad.

We are looking at Madeira for next year with teenagers and I've bookmarked the Pestana Porto Santo, Dreams and Navigator Columbus hotels. All look amazing. We will hire a car to explore and see the waterfalls.

The temperature is the difficult one in June but the canaries should be ish that temperature. Magic Life in fuerteventura might meet your requirements as it has several restaurants included in the price, multiple pools, beach adjoins the property (steps) and public bus stops outside. TUI owned so standards are decent, and transport it’s a full proper package with flight, coach and hotel, they even provided adaptions if you need them. Bikes for hire, snorkelling trips etc extra but was reasonable. Ai was pretty comprehensive drinks wise compared to other hotels I’ve stayed at and entertainment was good, with 3 options most of the time in the evening (pianist or guitarist in the bar quite quiet, theatre with shows and a bar area with bands, karaoke etc).

Balearics would be nice temp then (especially earlier in June) We went to Italy in early June and it was nice for sightseeing but too cool for sunbathing on the coast.

Alps - Austria or Switzerland.

Warmworm · 19/01/2026 20:26

Austrian Alps? We had a fabulous summer holiday there with teens. Obviously it is mountainous but the cable cars take you up and you can choose a gentle walk admiring the incredible views. The height also means it’s nice and cool. Lots of great half board spa hotels with indoor and outdoor pools/saunas etc.
