Family Holiday June avoiding scorching heat

CharlieChaplin99 · 13/01/2026 09:24

Looking at booking a holiday week away in June as a family with older teenagers. They are both pretty easy going, won’t mind where they go as long as we are paying and both will likely have a week away each with friends (before going back to Uni and starting work).

We are looking for either an AI or good half board hotel without needing to hire a car (so we can budget and so we all get some downtime). Ideally would like temps in early to mid 20’s max.

Wondering about Madeira (but heard its very hilly and concerned about the stereotype of older holiday makers), the Algarve (but not Albuferia), possibly Istria in Croatia (unsure of where to stay) or where else am I missing or could anyone recommend any hotels and areas that might work? Nothing too energetic a stomp to civilisation for reasons I don’t want to go into here.

Thanks

Costa de la Luz? Spanish Atlantic coast is cooler than the med and you will find plenty of AI hotels.

We had a car though, I can't remember how easy it would be without one.

We’ve just booked an air b n b lake house on the Stockholm archipelago as we also wanted to avoid scorching temperatures. Not far from Stockholm itself, but beautiful scenery if you didn’t want to go into the city.

Thanks sounds lovely for DH and I if he was in better health. But possibly not enough for our young people to do and they won’t want to be spending their own money doing anything on a holiday with us. Also is food not very expensive?

Someone will be along who knows more about this but the Alps (Swiss/Austrian particularly) often get recommended for
those wanting a cooler summer holiday - half board hotel, lake swimming, hiking/mountain biking for the kids and cable cars and views for you and DH?

Not necessarily cool, but the heat is different and I felt it was a lot easier to do things than when we went to the Med in August.

You can have overcast days as well but there is normally plenty to do.

@CharlieChaplin99 If you look at the Alps, check that transport is good if your husband has health issues and look for a valley location, not a hill town.
Some people recommend Zell am See for it.

Morocco and Lanzarote were both mid 20s in June when I went, neither were 🔥

Thank you but all he really wants to do is fly, flop, snooze, sleep, listen to his audio books and join us for meals.

That's exactly what we did in June in Marrakesh and Lanzarote, both were all inclusive with TUI. In Marrakesh there was the opportunity to go into the center and look around, which we did and enjoyed (never got hassled either as two females)

I think Portugal is always nice in the summer and not too hot. Loads to do or not. Food great. Lagos is lovely and Tavira also.

TiredofLDN · 14/01/2026 10:05

I would look at Slovenia- Lake Bled. Lots of nice relaxing hotels, the weather will likely be lovely, lots of outdoors-y activities for the teens, and they could book a night in Ljubljana at the prison hostel in Metelkova and go clubbing if they fancied.

CharlieChaplin99 · 14/01/2026 10:40

Thanks all.

These days we need
-a package holiday (due to DH’s ill health)
-relatively short flight
-early to mid 20 temps in early to
mid June
-DH doesn’t want to be sightseeing or doing very much other than flying, flopping, snoozing in the shade, sleeping, maybe a brief spells in the water (pool or beach), listening to his audio books.
-enjoying some nice food together at meal times.
-Our YP and occasionally myself may go for a walk exploring outside of the hotel occasionally.

Thanks

I still vote Madeira for you!

You can achieve this for your DH in any hotel city, coast, mountains or rural. If that’s all he wants to do / is able to do then why not focus on what you and your teens want to do?

reluctantbrit · 14/01/2026 13:39

Apart from the fact that the average temperature in June-August is high twenties and low thirties, a lot higher than the OP is looking for.

Thanks but if its overly hot he doesn’t do well or if its slightly hilly or a very long walk and taxis aren’t plentiful to go out for a meal somewhere he may struggle with that so we do have to be careful where we choose.

I assume your comment about an arse was directed at me? Despite the fact that I’ve actually responded with a suggestion to you.

Your comment about age was too vague and suggested ageism, which is not on. You should have clarified what you meant.

Ok sorry.

Funchal. Absolutely not hilly in Funchal.

We didn't hire a car but we did excursions. They have a really good bus service too.

Can you recommend a particular hotel?

In early June it isn’t - as per my earlier post on this thread.

Menorca would suit you.

Cala Galadana is absolutely beautiful

I cant sorry. We used a basic self catering accomodation.

But I know that if you go on any of the main travel sites- Jet2, TUI, easyjet, there is a really good selection of good quality hotels that offer all inclusive. Or half board.

Was going to suggest Sweden - we've had a cracking holiday there, but it was more car s/c and own pool-based than AI hell hole

grimupnorthnot · 14/01/2026 17:23

Northern Croatia - Rovinj - Mistral hotels, we stayed at one on the island, but they have a variety of hotels. Flew to Pula - we self-transported, so don't know what the transfer from Pula is like - but it's close to Solvina and Italy.
