Meeting someone of a different Nationality on a P&O cruise

Had a big anniversary a couple of years ago and became friendly with a sweet Chinese lady on a short cruise to the Channel Islands. She always sends me a message every couple of months and asks after the health of my husband and refers to him as “Peter our captain” which I find very strange wording. Does anyone have any ideas why she refers to him in this way please?

Were you part of a quiz team at any point of the cruise? Or any team really, where Peter could be considered a captain? Presumably she’s referring to something as a joke which she assumes you get. But from the outside it’s definitely a bit oblique!

Is he secretly a captain?

Arlanymor · 12/01/2026 19:13

Does he look like Captain Birdseye?

QPZM · 12/01/2026 19:13

Why on earth wouldn't you politely ask her? 😳

Of all the questions no-one else in the world will be able to answer with any certainty 👀

Christmaseree · 12/01/2026 19:23

If he’s called Dave or something then that’s really weird.

EdgarAllenRaven · 12/01/2026 19:30

Has she mistaken him for the Captain of the ship?!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 12/01/2026 22:01

Maybe she thinks you’re someone else!

Permanentlybewildered · 12/01/2026 22:15

No quiz teams - the mystery continues.

Is he bossy?

No quiz teams - the mystery continues.

Only because you won't communicate in a perfectly normal adult manner.

"Oh, why do you call him captain by the way?"

Job done.

Tpu · 13/01/2026 18:20

Is it possible that she thinks your husband was the captain of the/a ship?

My guess is something has got lost in translation.

HolyMolyRoly · 13/01/2026 18:41

She calls him Peter our captain because in China that is the traditional way to refer to the husband of someone you met on a P&O cruise.

QPZM · 13/01/2026 18:48

I reckon the OP should contact Jane McDonald.

She'll know the answer.

Bernadinetta · 13/01/2026 18:51

Maybe just a lost in translation attempt at a sign of respect. My dad has friends in India and they all call him Uncle as it’s a sign of respect

Permanentlybewildered · 13/01/2026 19:39

Ha!ha! QPZM It will probably come to that one day but at the moment I don't want to cause her any undue embarrassment because she is such a sweet lady. Merely thought one of you knowledgeable ladies might have a logical answer 😊.

Is your surname Phillips or Pugwash?
