Europe Road trip

Hi,

I’m after some thoughts from people who have done multi-day road trips with kids. We’re thinking of driving from the Algarve in Portugal back to the UK taking about 10 days and venturing into Switzerland. It would probably involve 4 days of 5+ hour journeys. Our kids will be 4 and 6 and I’m not sure if it will be too much for them. Anyone with experience of something similar would be appreciated.

thank you!

@Specialnameforanoutingthread i think your last point is really important. If the furthest kids go in the car generally is 30mins to see grandparents (for example) a long driving holiday probably isn’t going to go well. If they’re used to semi long drives in normal life, it’s less of a big deal. We travel 3hrs each way to see grandparents every month, so doing 4.5-5 hours over the course of a day doesn’t seem too dramatic.

Drive to santander or bilbao and get the ferry

TBH if anyone thinks the kids will be bored on a long car journey, wait till they do 24hr on a ferry!

6hr on Roscoff/Plymouth route is bad enough.

Not to mention can be a horrifically rough crossing. Plymouth roscoff is best overnight. Much longer but you don’t waste a day and don’t have to occupy people during the night.

It depends on how many days you will be spend on the trip as a whole. I would do 5 hrs so long as I was then spending a few nights.
I often chew over a loose plan I have to spend the whole summer moving from Eurocamp to Eurocamp - 3 nights at one, 4 nights at the next so only travelling on two days a week.
I get the Eurocamp map up and start planning but it never seems to come off.
