Solo travel tips

Hoping to get away for some late summer/autumn sun but will be travelling as a solo female for the first time in my life. Package holidays are all based on two sharing. Happy to go self catering, arrange my own transfers if needed but what’s the most cost effective way of travelling as a single person to avoid single occupancy fees. Looking for beach based, sunshine, by a pool reading a book sort of holiday for a week.

Have a look at Passion for Cruises website and Facebook group. They specialise in cruises and other holidays just for solos. They have very good deals.

You can still go on a package holiday , put one person in the search. It will be more expensive than what it would be per person if there were two travelling. However if you choose a cheaper country the single supplement isn’t too bad.
For example last year I went to a five star hotel in Egypt for a week for £750. If I had gone with another person it would have been £500 each but I still thought the £750 was reasonable. Then regarding excursions I just booked and paid for myself so no supplements there.

I know a single person who does all their trips on easyjet package holidays because they like to have everything arranged for them, apparently it's very cheap for a single traveller.

I used to travel a lot solo but enjoyed the freedom of being alone with only a very loose itinerary so just chose locations that were very inexpensive but safe...so no to south America, no to most parts of Africa, but yes to the Canary Islands, Portugal, south-east Asia!

I loved las palmas de Gran Canaria so much that I ended up moving here (not the city itself, but the northern part closer to la isleta)! Really cheap, really safe, lovely people, pretty beaches. The south of Gran canaria is a bit more expensive but they have loads of package holidays and more beachy vibes.

My favourite part of the world to travel is still south-east Asia- beautiful beaches, very safe, cheap once you get there (but expensive flights and only worth the long haul travel if it'll be a longer trip)

If you're thinking of going further afield and are flexible on dates, you can go onto kayak/skyscanner and input "anywhere in the world" and flexible on dates to see if there are any crazy cheap flights to random destinations all over the world, then build up your itinerary once you've chosen the flights (and therefore, location)

I went on a good value solo holiday to Tunisia three years ago booked with EasyJet.

I holiday in mountain areas a lot and find that hotels often have single rooms available. These are smaller and with a wide single bed, instead of a double but they are priced accordingly.

I use TUI or Expedia, never had any problems.

Travelling solo is so much fun. The only downside is that you end up resenting other people when you’re travelling in groups again!!

Some great suggestions here - thanks everyone 😊

If you're self catering, or even staying in a hotel the sticking point is that you'll pay the same for the accommodation whether there's one or two of you travelling and flights can be very cheap out of season.

I went to Playa Blanca in Lanzarote a few months ago by myself. I booked separately but could have done the same holiday as a jet2 package for slightly more.

I stayed HB in a hotel but if I did it again I'd self cater because while the hotel and pool etc was lovely, the food was a bit dull so I'd prefer to buy in some easy food for breakfast and eat out daily - a late lunch is my preference, especially when alone, then I only want something small with drinks in the evening.

I just got the public bus to and from the airport and to a couple of other places and went on an organised tour of the Cesar Manrique sites in the north of the island. The rest of the time I walked, read and swum in the sea each day.
