Ideas for a summer city break with teen DS

DS14 and I have a tradition of just the two of us tasking a short city break in summer.

So far we have enjoyed: Dublin, Budapest, Vienna, Bratislava, Berlin and Copenhagen.

We have especially enjoyed spots in Central Europe, for the history, food and culture. Would also like to visit the Baltic. We live in Cambridge so flights from Stanstead would be ideal, with good public transport the other end.

Any ideas about spots we might enjoy this summer? 🙂

Stockholm is nice for a city break, and Tallinn is very beautiful too.

Aarhus
Munich
Oslo
Reykjavik
Seville

Lisbon although might be too hot in the summer.

Whodrankmytea · 07/01/2026 08:02

Iceland lovely in the summer, Krakow (lots of history, cheap), Ljubliana/Bled, Amsterdam.

letshavetea · 07/01/2026 08:03

I would fly to Pisa and stay in Lucca. An absolutely beautiful small walled city. Lots to see and wonderful food.

Edinburghdaze · 07/01/2026 08:03

Rome.

Oslo is great! I have a similar tradition with my DS - albeit he’s a bit younger - and Oslo has been our best break. We went in early July and the weather was glorious, you can swim in the fjord around the city, super easy to get around, lots to see and do.

evtheria · 07/01/2026 08:13

Lyon - make sure to book a swimming session in the pool by the river, iirc tickets for the week open online on Weds or sth…

DelinquentSnails · 07/01/2026 09:07

Thanks so much. There are some brilliant ideas here I would never have considered. Oslo sounds particularly tempting, although I wonder if it’s super expensive (Copenhagen was!)

Split. Porto. Seville is amazing but would be v hot. Recently back from Lublijana/Bled and second that too.

Treylime · 07/01/2026 09:13

We had a day in Munich last summer really liked it.

PoliteSquid · 07/01/2026 09:30

Tallinn is fabulous - would highly recommend!
My teens all loved Brussels as well.

nabanna · 07/01/2026 09:39

Gdansk - things to see and do as well as mooching around, great WW2 museum, the harbour area and shipyard museum, trips to Baltic coast resorts and good food choices,
Went in May a few years ago and would 100% recommend it for a city break

MiddleAgedDread · 07/01/2026 09:43

closer to home Belfast and Edinburgh make great city breaks (just avoid Edinburgh in August when the festivals are on!).
Porto and Barcelona are lovely but possibly a bit warm for a city break in summer.

MadamCholetsbonnet · 07/01/2026 09:59

Rome
Split
Stockholm

MinnieMountain · 07/01/2026 11:46

Munich. DS and I had a great time there when he was 11.

I love Rome, as did he, but not in the summer.

Edinburgh.

momahoho1 · 07/01/2026 12:09

Helsinki is nice.

reluctantbrit · 07/01/2026 12:40

Munich
Hamburg (you can easily go to Lübeck by train for a day)
Krakow (Ausschwitz can be done but tickets have to be booked far in advance)
Stockholm

FaerieQueene · 07/01/2026 14:19

As others have said, Tallinn is a fabulous city and reasonably priced too. It has a medieval centre but there are lots of 'cool' areas too which might appeal to your ds. You can also take a ferry to Helsinki from Tallinn very easily so could fly into Tallinn and out of Helsinki.

PevenseygirlQQ · 07/01/2026 14:21

Prague is fab!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/01/2026 14:21

Watching!

Also Nice/Monaco

We did Amsterdam this summer when DCs were 14 and 18. We had a blast - lots to do, and quite a young, vibey city. Plus it's really easy to day trip other places - one or other of us went to Haarlem, Utrecht, and Antwerp by train while there.

AngeloMysterioso · 07/01/2026 16:11

Dubrovnik
Amsterdam
Nice (day trips to Cannes, Monaco, Eze, Ventimiglia)

Rattysparklebum · 07/01/2026 20:23

Warsaw is a great city especially if you enjoy modern history, we also did Krakow when mine were similar age to yours and they say it was their best holiday.
