21st birthday trip to NY

I’m debating on taking my son to New York for a 21st birthday trip during October half term. I’ve been before, but have always promised to take him. I’m thinking of a short four day trip to see the main sights. Can anyone recommend a good mid price, centrally located hotel for the two of us. Husband doesn’t want to go, so just the two of us 🇺🇸🗽

We stayed at the double tree Hilton Time Square west, decent location. We stayed as 2 adults 2 teens in one room so it was a little cramped but you don’t spend a lot of time in your hotel.
We booked it as a package with BA in their January sale.

Personally. wouldn't touch USA with a bargepole whilst present incumbent of the White House is in power

Cool story. Not what was asked.

What a lovely idea OP.

Came on here to give the exact same response and it was the first comment, ha!

Went in 2023, booked in BA Jan sale, flights and hotel included for 4 nights/5 days, Hilton Times Square West and it was £700pp to go at the end of November over thanksgiving week. There were two of us sharing a room which was fine space wise.

Have actually stayed at that hotel twice and it’s in a fantastic location. Also clean, comfortable and felt safe staying there.

Get your Esta’s and insurance sorted before you book if travelling to the USA.

i’d also leave it last minute or book refundable, apparently jfk is chaos today as flights are being cancelled due to the restrictions on airspace due to the Venezuela issues. Who knows whether that will escalate or not.

Thanks for the recommendation. I was hoping to book the sooner the better.

Stayed in a fantastic hotel in Times Square for DCs 21st a few years ago. Had a fabulous time. Thought TS was pretty central for everything

Looking for the exact same for Easter!

It’s really difficult isn’t it bc a
lot of the 3/4 star hotels on trip adviser have some terrible reviews!

springlike · 04/01/2026 21:56

Have just booked for my son and myself for his 21st in March. Booked a BA holiday and chose a Midtown hotel as want to be in that area. I've been before several times so looking forward to spending time with him there and being tourists!

@Dollyfloss I think location is more important than anything as we’ll be out most of the time sight seeing.

@springlike Just out of interest, which hotel have you booked?

stayed here in November and it’s a great location and cool for. 21 year old

springlike · 04/01/2026 22:05

The Hyatt Grand Central. Stayed there before a few years back. Reviews are ok, bit mixed but I know where it is and where I want to be for ease of getting about. Staying 3 nights and chose a room with 2 double beds and a city view. We won't spend much time there either but next to GC so perfect for up and out in the mornings.
Stayed in Hilton Midtown 2 years ago. Great hotel but don't think the location is as good for getting out and about.

Lindy0070 · 04/01/2026 22:20

That’s funny, I was just looking at the Hilton Midtown as an option. Thanks for the advice.

Park central hotel, stayed May 25 also for a 21st birthday, 5 min walk to Central Park in one direction and 7/8 min walk to times square in the other 😀

ChaliceinWonderland · 04/01/2026 22:28

I prefer brooklyn itx cheaper. Or Greenwich village. Times Square us like staying in picadil circus. There are cool boutique hotels, also hoboken a nice area....

JasonTindallsTan · 04/01/2026 22:29

We stayed here last year for DD’s 21st https://www.ihg.com/crowneplaza/hotels/gb/en/new-york/nycpc/hoteldetail really well situated near Penn Station so super easy to get to from JFK on public transport. Easy access to high line, Hudson yards, just a few blocks from Times Square and Central Park, round the corner from MSG. Honestly could not have been better placed and it’s really well reviewed. I’d stay here again in a heartbeat. Lovely burger restaurant attached as well.

Are you definitely wanting to stay in midtown, OP? I'm a native New Yorker and it wouldn't be my choice, but it depends what you want to do while there. What kind of budget are you thinking for the hotel?

Samewrinklesnewname · 04/01/2026 22:32

I was at the Margaritaville Resort Hotel a couple of months ago-would seriously recommend it. Right on the corner of W40th/7th Ave, it’s an amazing location. It was for a big birthday trip too, so I emailed about 10 days before we went amd managed to get a free upgrade

I’ve just booked 4 nights in May for my daughter’s 21st. Staying at Civilian Hotel, Midtown. Good reviews and no tourist tax. Can’t wait!

NestaArcheron · 04/01/2026 23:07

The Edison hotel - it’s right off of broadway. Absolutely perfect location, beautiful and reasonably priced hotel, and you get breakfast included in the little breakfast diner in the lobby which is amazing
