Nice resorts in Tenerife (not Playa de las Americas)

Been there, had a good time but too big and characterless for us. Can anyone suggest somewhere that is quieter (but not too quiet) and nicer? Still want bars & restaurants to walk to. Plan to hire a car and explore the island. Prefer self catering vs hotel. Puerto De la Cruz and Los Gigantes on the list so far. Any thoughts?

We went to Los Christianos which is next to playa de Las americas and it was nice. We stayed in apartments on the edge and were fifteen mins walk to a beach and ten mins to a restaurant or shop.

Costa Adeje. We’ve been several times & it’s lovely.
