Where would you go for a month in August?

With our daughter soon starting school, any month long trips will have to take place in the summer holidays and realistically we probably won't be able to go away for a month until August 2028 at the earliest when she'd be 6 (7 in the December).

A few ideas I'm playing around with are:

Borneo and Panang.
.
Azores

I'd also like to do Ecuador/Galapagos Islands but she may need to be 8/9yo for a trip like that.

Would also consider other parts of South America (heard Columbia is good too in August).

What do people recommend?

Depends how fussed you are about hitting the rainy season, unfortunately lots of the world is rainy then

Good weather in:

Europe
Indonesia
Borneo
Malaysia (East coast)/Singapore
East Africa (would want her to be a fair bit older due to jabs / malaria)
Peru I think
Ecuador I think
Canada
USA (too hot in S)

Would your DD want to be away for a month? Both my DDs enjoy travelling but are keen to come home and see friends, their own bed etc after about 11/12 days.

Borneo and Penang - why? Penang is virtually a beach holiday with not a lot to see. Borneo is vast - Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia.
Colombia is also a large country where the cities have different vibes. Cartagena, for example is completely different from Bogotá.
I've lived in all these countries, but cannot advise without knowing what sort of holiday you want.

We are an outdoorsy family and would consider hikes in the jungle, nature, beaches and culture.

Not interested in resorts

I used to live in Malaysia and as a teacher had the summer holidays to explore a month at a time. I think Vietnam has the most to offer. I did it with two grannies and my two kids aged 6 and 7 at the time. So much to see and do. Lots of variety and felt very safe.

I equally love Penang and used to go every year. When kids were aged 2-10. Not a beach holiday place as the sea is not great for swimming. But it's only a boat trip away from Langkawi which has gorgeous beaches and is better for swimming. How about 2 weeks at each?

I also so did 4 weeks in Indonesia with 2 weeks in the Gili islands then two weeks in Bali. Would not recommend the latter personally. The snorkeling in the Gili islands is amazing and fairly kid friendly.

I also so did a month in Thailand with a week in Bangkok, a week in Chiang Mai and 2 weeks in Pai. I know Thailand quite well so it was easy enough and well set up for travelling around. Amazing food.

Sri Lanka - best month our family ever had! We went last week July but had great weather and did a full circle of the island!

Stowickthevast · 23/12/2025 07:54

I was going to say Sri Lanka. We also did Costa Rica in August but you have to pick which parts you go to - the Carribbean coast is quite dry but the Pacific is wet.

Though to be honest we tend to go long haul at Easter as the weather is better. We've done Vietnam, India and Guatemala at Easter which have all been great. You can do a decent holiday in 2 weeks, and then we go to Europe in the summer which is gorgeous weather wise.

Come to Western Australia, hire a Britz campervan and follow the wildflowers. Stop in lots of little towns, our dd loves the tiny rural museums and the flowers here are like nothing else in the world.

Start in the northern areas and work your way south.

Some of the holidays we've done with dd, going away for a month in the summer are:

Borneo, Brunei and Malaysia
Indonesia
India
Panama and Costa Rica
Australia
South Africa and Namibia
Sri Lanka

All involved travelling around, lots of nature and some beaches. All were lovely in different ways.

Penisbeakeralltheclassics · 24/12/2025 08:27

I have to admit that the rainy monsoon doesn’t appeal to me so we follow the weather. Summer we’ve done this;

Indonesia is an easy month long trip and great in Aug. Your budget can go a long way. We loved it from climbing volcanos to Orangutang watching, to Komodo dragons.

Peru we also loved, but might be harder with a young child as Machu P was quite a hard trek, but just loads to do and so varied

Tanzania, would burn your budget but if you want quality over quantity, try into get the northern migration is phenomenal. Namibia is an easier safari option and lots of other things. Distances are big though.

We enjoyed the east of Canada too and lots of outdoor pursuits as well as. The West is also great (but we’ve only been in Winter)

We are heading to Brazil next year, but it’s a huge country and again you might struggle with budget.

We’ve also done other more northerly trips such as Svalbard, but they are budget busting and I’m not sure you DD is old enough.

Throwntothewolves · 24/12/2025 09:03

It might sound 'boring' but have you done much in the way of travelling closer to home? Could you tour around the UK, or an area of Europe perhaps?

fashionqueen0123 · 24/12/2025 09:05

northern Australia, queensland
Hawaii
Vietnam

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 24/12/2025 09:05

I'd be looking at Scandinavian destinations and Bavaria.
Germany has great outdoors options)

I loved the adores but not for a month. Also the food is middling at absolute best (which i didn't understand given the proximity to sea and fish but ... 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hawaii would be amazing but I dont think 15k would get you a month

Vietnam is wet in the summer at the top and bottom.

House4DS · 24/12/2025 09:26

Sri Lanka, Costa Rica, Malaysian Borneo, Northern Vietnam and Kenya have worked well for us in August. Sri Lanka my favourite. Costa Rica was kids favourite.

Can you share your Indonesia itineraries? I'm thinking of flying in to Jakarta and out of Bali this summer but nothing booked yet.

ShanghaiDiva · 24/12/2025 09:31

have done the following trips in August:
Brunei and Sarawak
western Australia - Perth to Broome
Bali and Java
central Vietnam
central Vietnam, Hanoi, Luang Prabang, Bangkok and Hong Kong - some wet days but didn’t affect the trip. Hong Kong is surprisingly green and lots of areas for hiking.

cariadlet · 24/12/2025 09:34

@House4DSWe went to Indonesia years ago so I can't remember the itinerary, sorry. We wanted to see Komodo Dragons and went to Rinca rather than Komodo. That was amazing. I remember liking Ubud on Bali but can't remember where else we went (either on Bali or which other islands we visited).

Flowerslamp · 24/12/2025 09:36

I'd go North. Scandinavia.

travailtotravel · 24/12/2025 09:36

Well I did the Stans, Japan and this year Nicaragua in August.
