When to holiday? 3 year old and tiny baby

Practical people: when should we book a holiday for? I’m thinking a week in Cornwall/ centre parcs out of season, or northern France.

  • we have a 3 yr old so our last year of being able to travel outside of schools hols. He starts in September.
  • I am Pregnant: due the third week of April. I expect the C-section will take me out from feeling anything like a human until the end of May at the earliest.

Do we have a little family holiday before baby comes in, say March? But I’d hate to not be able to do anything like waterslides or cycle. Do we suck it up and pay for something in August when we’ll all be back on our feet?
Or do we go early July (slightly outside of super high travel fees) and hope for the best with a ten week old?
Or something else? Say October half term? I have no experience with travel or prices during school holidays because late this year will be our first rodeo.

In a similar situation to you - due in March and have a 3.5 year old! We’ll be going to the Lakes in July and North Wales in August, but we’ll save our big holiday for the October half term (we get two weeks, so it’s a bit cheaper to go during the first week, luckily).

Not that I’m advocating taking kids out of school for holidays, but if your primary concern is being fined, they can’t fine you until the term after they turn 5. I wouldn’t want to travel a long way the month before my due date so I’d go for July rather than March.

We did Eurocamp when ours were small, usually in Northern France, and the end of June was an ideal time to go. The weather was much the same as July but it was just before a lot of European schools finish up so it was a good bit cheaper than the beginning of July.

Go in September. October starts getting cold even in southern Europe.

First week of September means you still get in places as many close for the season after mid September, or reduce hours open at attractions

We went on holiday with a just 3 yr old and a 6 week old baby. It was easy because he slept in a baby carrier and just woke up to be fed. DH argued that to go later when DS was 3 or 4 months old would be harder. I think he was right.

10 weeks old is a great age for holidays. They sleep and feed, they are very portable and easy to carry. Weather in July will be lovely.
