I've only stayed in St Julian's and Sliema - both very easy on public transport to get to Valletta. I love Malta, great idea for half term.

we stayed here a couple of years ago - 10 minute walk down to the waterfront. I think they do apartments as well as rooms and have a small pool which a lot of places dont in the built up area.

We stayed in a small family run B&B called 'Paulos Valletta', we had a sizeable room with sofa bed plus queen bed. Location is great, walking distance to everything in Valletta. If you do stay here, make sure you obtain the code to get in the front door if arriving late afternoon onwards. We went Easter time (very end of March) and it was pleasantly warm, if a bit windy, but despite being so early in the season the kids got numerous mosquito bites, though husband and I were not bitten once. February may not be warm enough for it to be an issue but perhaps pack bug spray just in case.
