where to stay in Vienna (districts)

We are going to be in Vienna next April for a week, and have never been to the city before. From a quick google of self-catering apartments, the city centre (inner stadt) appears to be twice the price of everywhere else. So we (me, DH, 17 year old DS) are looking for advice on areas to target. We don't mind walking into the tourist areas or a short tram/underground ride. Somewhere easy to get to from the airport/station would be good too as we're planning a day in Bratislava too.

We stayed here. Vienna is really easy to get around by train.

I would recommend the Adina Belvedere - https://www.adinahotels.com/en/apartments/vienna-belvedere/

I stayed here a couple of years ago and the location was perfect - literally a 2 min walk from the hauptbahnhof (main train station) so great for the airport and day trips, and a 5 mins walk to the nearest tram which was a really useful line. It was about an easy 20 min walk to the innere stadt with stuff to see along the way. There are also bars/restaurants/cafes/street food/supermarkets in the immediate vicinity.

The apartments themselves are lovely, plus they serve breakfast in the bar and there's a pool which is a bonus.

thanks all for recommendations. we are looking for somewhere with 2 bedrooms as DS definitely doesn't want to share with us for a week (and we don't want to share with him either tbh) and a lot of places I'm seeing count a living space with sofa bed as a proper bedroom. We have time, so will keep looking.

We stayed here. It was right beside an U-Bahn and just 2 stops to Karlsplatz. We had our 22 year old with us so like you needed 2 bedrooms and the living area was big and comfy too.

(I have lived here for 20 years.) Anywhere in districts 3 to 9 will be fine and still very central. Public transport is amazing so everywhere is accessible. Plenty of nice places in the other districts too, just certain parts of 2., 10. and 16. that I personally wouldn't love at night (but would probably still walk through alone at 3am as I do everywhere else in the city).

I have put family up here before and it was great, very dated and very cheap but clean, but unfortunately it looks like they have renovated to some extent so probably no longer such a steal. Great location though https://serviced-appartements-josefstadt.hotelsinvienna.org/en/#main

We stayed near Westbahnhof at Hotel Brauhof Wien, it's like midway between Schonnbrunn and the ringstrasse. I booked very last minute which is why we ended up there, but as an area it was fine.

Lots of people have posted accommodation ideas so I'll not add to them. We went to Vienna in August (my third visit but after a gap of 25 or so years) and all loved it (me plus DH and teenage DD). It's a very walkable city with good public transport that is easy to use. We stayed just outside the Ring near the opera in a two bedroom flat on a quiet side street. Have a wonderful trip, I'm envious. 😀
