Calling Cambridge! Recommended hotels (reasonable?!!)

We are travelling from Ireland in late July/early august and I would love to visit Cambridge for a few days. I lived there a number of years ago but as a young mum and vowed I would come back as visitor and soak up the history. Nows my chance - with hubby and 3 of our teenagers in tow. Where to say though? Its all pretty pricey for the five of us. I would love a pleasant hotel - that had an English feel about it for my Irish family (does that make sense?!) Can you recommend anywhere PLEASE.

thanks

there is a hotel du vin which has opened up in the city centre. they are a chain but one of the nicer ones. not been but have heard very good reviews. i have eaten at the one in birmingham and it was very lovely.

just re-reading your post i see that you wanted somewhere within a reasonable budget - you might get something via laterooms.com or hotels.com if this one is too expensive

Have decided to book a B&B in Ely. The city sounds very pleasant. I should know it cos I was a young mum in Cambridge and use to visit newmarket and St Ives and probably Ely, but I cant place Ely. We are booked to stay at a 4* self catering called Cathedral House. Can anyone offer any insights into Ely or accomm? We are hoping to travel in on train to Cambridge. Any suggestions on where to eat in Ely etc.. all gratefully received.
