Gift ideas for backpacking 20 somethings

Hello, my daughter and her boyfriend are currently 2 months into a 6 month backpacking trip to SE Asia and NZ. I’d like to send something at Christmas that’s not just money. Any ideas? They’ll be in Indonesia then and will be heading to Malaysia then New Zealand.

I know NZ will be more expensive - they’re renting a camper van - maybe there’s some kind of coffee chain voucher than might be useful? But any ideas for something that can be emailed to them?

I'd do cash. It's restrictive otherwise.
You could look up an experience to suggest but give them cash towards it so they can choose?
E.g. Boat trip from Te Anau to doubtful sound was amazing but expensive.
Or look up a good restaurant somewhere they will visit and send with a 'to use at XX'.

I know - it’s just money seems a bit impersonal and low effort. But probably sensible. Boat trip sounds a good alternative/additio -I’ll look into that, thanks.

What about a spa day at a fancy hotel or resort? That would be heaven for backpackers! Somewhere in Indonesia or Malaysia would be cheap by UK prices, even at a Western chain like the Hilton or Marriott.

Indeed! They’ll definitely appreciate a bit of luxury by then.

Or similarly, a couple of nights in a nice hotel rather than a hostel.

When DS was in Kenya for three months on a game reserve I sent new underwear and socks and books. When DD was backpacking in Australia she definitely appreciated nights in a hotel as opposed to a hostel.

When I was many years younger and travelling I would have gone mad with excitement if I’d been told I had a night in a lush hotel with bar and pool!! There are some amazing options in KL for when they are in Malaysia…the Shangri La, Four Seasons - I think there is a Pan Pacific too. What a wonderful Mum you are. I’m savings this idea for a few years how the line if my son is away!! ❤️
