Canaries - are there any less built up resorts? Want no kids, bit more traditional and a bit of sun!

Probably not Lanzarote as done that, but any ideas for quieter, more authentic places please?

Puerto de la Cruz in north Tenerife? It was about 20 years ago when I went there so may have changed. Fab lido for swimming too.

Thank you. I really like the look of the towns in the north - far more traditional which is more our cup of tea tbh. But looking to go in February and it seems the climate is a little cooler.

Or Santa Cruz in Tenerife, it's the island's capital. No beach unless you head out of the (small) city. Good public park, promenades, quite a different feel from the resorts in the south of the island.

I was going to suggest northern Tenerife too. Or South/West coast of Fuerteventura

Yes, there's a reason why the main resort areas are in the south of the islands, the weather is better in winter.

But it depends what you mean by 'quieter, more authentic' and also 'done'.

If you are just looking for somewhere that is not very built up and Brits on the piss you'll have far more choice than if you mean 'completely non touristy'.

Are you using done as a similie for 'been to once or twice' or 'done to death'? Again, depending on what you mean by this, have you been to Northern Lanzarote? The stretch of coast between Orzola and Arriete? The weather on Lanzarote is probably less geographically dependent than Gran Canaria and Tenerife as its not a classical volcano shape but if you've not been there it would probably suit and you could get the ferry to La Graciosa for the day or even an overnight stay. The south is also at most an hour away if you want a change of scene. You'd probably need a car though.

Or what about La Gomera? You can get there via a ferry from Tenerife.

Anywhere in particular you’d recommend? Thank you.

This is an AI resort on the south coast of La Palma.
It is basically in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by banana plantations.

Not sure it meets your requirements as it isn't authentic (it is a typical AI resort), but when we went in mid-September it was relatively quiet apart from at the weekend when it was bustling with Spanish weekenders.

Yes we’ve been all around Lanzarote and loved it - fantastic scenery and interesting places. I love volcanoes! Not looking for proper hot sunbathing weather just warm, no woolly jumpers needed. We’re not big fans of the built up resorts with Irish bars and hotel entertainment. Looking for more traditional and quiet with a handful of restaurants. Have thought of La Gomera but how easy/quick is the ferry crossing?

Looks nice but don’t like AI - we love to explore!

Sorry to resurrect this thread but did you find anywhere? It’s exactly what I’m looking for too.

@WonderfulSmith have a look at La Caleta in Tenerife. We went there every day to get away from the built up areas.

We stayed in El Cotillo on the North West coast. Had a fabulous time exploring round there and the beautiful inland hills and villages.

For the new poster, take a look at Mogan in gran canaria and see if that fits the bill.

Rocknrollstar · 07/03/2026 08:50

Tui Blue Suite Princess, Adults only, all inclusive on Gran Canaria. Our favourite place. There is entertainment every evening but if you want somewhere livelier and in a resort look at the Neptuno in Massapolomas. We alternate between the two.

I’m going to Puerto Mogan in Gran Canaria on Monday, that looks like what you’re looking for.

Airbnb right by the beach - not that we’re big beach people. Loved the centre of old El Cotillo - not a fan of the bigger hotels springing up but we ate in some fab places and people so friendly.

Ah we loved it there . Son went back with his own family twenty years later last February saying it was still a lovely area.

Are we talking about El Cotillo in Tenerife or Fuerteventura? I’m confused.

Bjorkdidit · 08/03/2026 07:55

Yes, I've been round the whole northern coast of Lanzarote on Google maps after only finding the one in Fuerteventura.

Now need to know so I can add it to the list for my next trip.
