Tourist visa for Australia?

ChocoFroggie · 23/11/2025 07:46

Hello MN,

DD is going to Australia on the 16th Of December- has paid for her ticket. She's only just realised she needs to apply online for a tourist visa, and is now panicking because the website says it can take some time.

Has anyone recently applied for and received a visitor's visa? Hoping for some reassuring stories of course but would be grateful to hear any experiences so she knows what to expect.

TIA.

Don’t panic, I got mine in minutes.

harriettenightingale · 23/11/2025 07:49

Be sure to use the official one or third party ones charge you more.

curious79 · 23/11/2025 07:50

She’ll get in within the day. Do it today

harriettenightingale · 23/11/2025 07:50

I’m going on 17th (from Bali, am travelling)

QOD · 23/11/2025 07:50

What … I’m going on 6th December … visa?

Everybodysinthehousetonight · 23/11/2025 07:53

If she has a UK passport, it takes less than a day and will be free. If any website tries to charge you, it is a third party.

Oh gosh, thank you lovely Mumsnetters - that is just what I was hoping to hear!

She applied this morning so crossing everything for a speedy response!

Thanks again.

I applied for a business visa a few months ago and it was accepted the same day (it took a couple of hours I think). I would be surprised if a tourist one (for someone in the UK at least) takes any longer

LegoLandslide · 23/11/2025 07:56

We forgot and applied on the spot at the UK airport at check in... all fine although I wouldn't recommend leaving it that late!

I guess in certain circumstances it would take longer e.g. non-UK passport, frequent travel to places on the politically interesting link, etc.

ChocoFroggie · 23/11/2025 07:56

@QOD - yes, visa. Only a free tourist one that you can apply for online. But apply we must

Phew!! Mine was instantly granted - so grateful you made this post … 😜

Great! Tell her to take a pen as well, because on the flight landing in Australia she will be handed this card https://www.falconmigration.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Incoming-Card.jpg that she needs to fill. It is very important that she leaves on the plane anything fresh such as an apple or half eaten sandwich. If in doubt when filling up the card, declare, and the worse that can happen is the item will be confiscated without any fine or warning.

great tip!

YippyKiYay · 01/12/2025 23:49

Good tips Duckduckgo! I was about to say the bit about the food from the plane! Have seen a tourist fined for having their half eaten tomato sandwich...
I forgot about the entry cards - still on paper - that even us Aussies need to complete (and children) each and every time .... It's so they can get your signature saying you have nothing to declare and then fine you for what you didn't declare. Cos you've signed it and it's a legal document.
I also just over declare (brought back chocolate from NZ and declared that under 'milk products ' )

QOD · 02/12/2025 04:17

I was going to ask about chocolate! So deffo say milk then. I have loads of chocolate for my daughter and fellas stockings etc and sweets
I take melatonin but I feel like I can’t take that into Australia?
it’s not r prescribed

ILoveDuckDuckGo · 02/12/2025 09:08

You can take melatonin. And industrial confectionary is fine I believe. You can always over declare as PP does, and when you hand your card, they will ask you what it is you declared and if you say chocolate, they will probably directly to the exit and not one of the custom lanes. .

ChocoFroggie · 02/12/2025 20:41

Gosh, my turn to say thank you for the alert. Very good tip to declare everything, thank you !
