Quiet resort near Barcelona

We usually go to France or Netherlands by ferry but we’re thinking about Barcelona area for after GCSEs next year. Me, DH and 15 year old DD. Two bed rooms or one bed with living room sofa bed. DH would like to stay in Barcelona but I’d prefer somewhere on the coast with beach and swimming pool. We’re not big resort people so wondering about a more small and/or local village or town with beach and public transport to Barcelona. Access to Portaventura a must as well. Or should we just head to somewhere like Salou for choice of accommodation?

We stayed in El Masnou in a stunning Airbnb a couple of years ago.

As long as you are ok with hills it's a wonderful place. Gorgeous beach and easy transport into Barcelona.

Sitges is the nicest town along that stretch of coast. Also, Cambrils is nicer than Salou.

La pineda is lovely it is round the coast a bit from salou it is quiet I also like cambrills, Barcelona is 90ish minutes away by bus though so it might not be close enough for you.

Tossa de Mar is beautiful

We stayed in Santa Susannah, and it was a 45 minute, 6 euro train ride into Barcelona. Santa Susannah is quiet with a lovely beach.

We stayed in Sitges 10 years ago when our DS was the same age as your DD. It certainly isn’t a quiet village, but it is a nice coastal town with beaches, lots of restaurants etc and when we stayed there, there was plenty of choice of self catering accommodation. There is a train link to Barcelona, it’s not far.

I went there a few years ago, took our own tent + stayed here - https://calallevado.com/en just gorgeous! Pitch Tent Seaview (acces by foot)
The town is lovely, the beaches are great and there's plenty to explore.

I would stay in one of the hotels in Port Aventura for a night or two, then somewhere close to Barcelona like Vilanova or Castelldefels for some days’ sightseeing in the city and then go to one of the quieter places for a whille too. You could look at Tossa as PP recommended, Pals (Platja), Calella de Palafrugell, Begur. If you really want to stay in one place only, I would find anywhere aside from Sitges, Vilanova and Castelldefels and surroundings a pain to travel from, both down to Port Aventura and into the city.

Avoid Salou, it's a hole and La Pineda is boring. Cambrils much nicer. However it's about 1hr45 from Barcelona by train, if not more. So I'd do as a pp suggested and stay at port Aventura a night or two, then Barcelona.

Sitges is pretty. Villanova I la Geltru (one town furthest away from Sitges) is quieter but also very nice. Tarragona (south of Barcelona towards Salou/Cambrils) is lovely and has 4 great beaches.

jeaux90 · 21/11/2025 07:22

Sitges is nice. Very lively nightlife though. If you want something beautiful and quiet with good places to eat try Begur area after Barcelona. Beautiful cove beaches around and lovely day trips.

We stayed in Santa Susanna like a PP.

We stayed with PIL from Australia there after they disembarked a cruise in Barcelona.
Beach was lovely.
Heavy French influence. Really good Pina coladas - DH hasn't stopped talking about them 7/8 years later.

We took a boat to Tossa de Mar one day which was nice.
I stayed in Tossa de Mar previously, but it's a bit further out of Barcelona than Santa Susanna and not flat, which was required for MIL.

For a quiet beach stay near Barcelona, Sitges or Castelldefels are great options; they have family apartments, pools, and easy train access to the city. If Port Aventura is a must, consider a short stay in Salou for convenience. A split stay works well: a couple of nights in Barcelona for sightseeing, then 2 nights on the coast for beach and relaxation.

Is this ChatGTP? If not, I’m curious why you’d consider the hotels in Salou more convenient than the hotels inside the park. Is there a hotel in Salou you have stayed at yourself that you find better than the Port Aventura ones? I’m never sure which is better

Cambrils or Tarragona are both lovely and a lot quieter than Salou, you are still near to Portaventura. The beaches in Salou get too crowded in peak season.
