City/beach break

Hello. We are a family of 5 looking for a beach/city break in April. We would like somewhere warmer than the UK so we could enjoy a lazy day by the pool or a beach. We'd be going for at least a week so although you can't guarantee the weather would hope that there would be the odd warm day were we could do this.
My first thought was Barcelona. I've never been before but lots to see if the weather is miserable and the beach if its warm.
Can anyone recommend a similar location? Extra points if you can recommend a hotel that accommodates families of 5! TIA

Barcelona yes but stay in sites. Gorgeous

Palma Majorca - we stayed a 20 min bike ride away from the cathedral in a villa on a residential street 100m from a fabulous beach, restaurants etc. Perfect mix of both

Málaga?

Lisbon. Stay in the city a few days then head to cascais

Spain may not be that warm to really have a pool/beach day. More a T-Shirt and shorts weather walking around, think low twenties, not more.

The Canaries are more weather secure.

You could look into Cypus as well. Plenty to do if the weather is not fully sunproof.

Malta. Valetta is lovely.

Spain/Mallorca can be cold in April…

I’ve been to Barcelona often in all months. Weirdly the worse weather was April/ May with this horrrible freezing fog that rolled in every morning. Jan and Feb have alway been sunny and bright. But you are right - loads to do either way.
I think Canaries get some sort of wind in early Spring. Gran Canaria in the south is least problematic weather wise. The steep. hills and sand dunes are fun to explore

How far would you travel and are you looking to actually get into the water? I only ask because there are places in Europe where sitting in the sun by the pool would be nice in April, but the pool itself not so much!

It's hit and miss with the weather at that time of year, we went to Malta over Easter 2024 (late March/early April). We had a couple of days of 25 degrees and sat in the beach, people were in the sea but it was cold like 18 degrees. I think swimming pools would have been very cold if outdoors and not heated. Other days the wind had us wearing jumpers despite being 20 degrees. This year it seems Spain was warmer than Malta at that time of year. Agree Valencia is lovely. Also Seville (which I realise is not coastal) has the Semana Santa parades in the week leading up to Easter and Malta had great parades on Good Friday and Easter Sunday, we saw the ones in Victoria, Gozo.

I think you need to decide if the city or beach element is more important that time of year. Plenty of cities in Southern Europe will be lovely in April for walking around in t shirt and shorts and sitting outside to eat and drink, but it will not be reliably warm enough for flopping by the beach or pool, indeed many hotel and apartment pools may not even be open at that time of year.

Another vote for Málaga

We went to Barcelona last February & it was fantastic! Loved it!
