Hi my husband and son are going to Marrakesh next weekend . I understand that you cannot take currency into the country - any tips on best way to obtain cash when they are there ?

also any other top tips or places to go/eat would be welcome

thank you

You can just take it out at the airport or other ATMs.

I personally thought the food was very bad generally, but loved the vibe of the city!

When we went to Morocco last year we got our currency at the airport on arrival and then, on leaving, changed the unspent dirham back again. We also changed some at a bank whilst there.

This was at Essaouira airport which is tiny, but the currency booth opened before and after flights arrived and departed. At a larger and busier airport like Marrakesh I'm sure it would be open all the time.

We enjoyed nomad in the medina and dada is good for drinks and a fabulous view at sunset. The hotel Ali has the best exchange rates. We used a debit card in most places.

Cash machines - plenty around. Everyone needs currency when they land.

i stayed in the old town and loved it. So much atmosphere! Food ranged from amazing to overpriced tourist crap so pick your restaurant carefully!

the fresh bread and fruit from the street sellers were lovely.

I used the cash machines in the main square.

Just back from Marrakesh. We got cash from the cash machines in the main square. Some places were accepting euros as well.

NCTDN · 16/11/2025 10:04

Where are they staying? They need to visit the souks around the main square and then compare to ‘new’ Marrakesh.
We did a guided walking tour which was really worth it to get our bearings.

(Probably too late for you, but may help others) Dar Moha was excellent when we ate (a long) lunch there a few years ago. Good selection of wines, including some very good Moroccan wines. Fine dining in the Michelin style - don't think it had a star, but felt in Bib Gourmand territory.

Also probably too late, but for anyone else who is interested, the airport bus (19 I think) takes Euro (was 2e now I think 3e) probs won't do change. And cash machines avail

TheM55 · 16/11/2025 23:11

I had added a picture there about cashpoints in the airport but it hasn't come out. Al Barid Bank does free cash withdrawals and is apparently in airport. I don't know this for an actual fact as I am going tomorrow, but this is what I have found x

You can get a limited amount of MAD before you go, they are not widely stocked you you might have to order online. You can get approximately £200
