Good backpack for teen son

Our DS is taking his first solo trip next year - I imagine the first of many - and we would like to get him a good backpack for Christmas. Does anyone have any good backpack recommendations? One that’ll last, has a side handle too and maybe also opens like a case. TIA

It’s a very personal item, which he would be better choosing himself instore. The fit and comfort is crucial, as well as size and weight when filled.
If it were me I’d gift a small travel item plus a promise to take him shopping for the bag.

DS usually buys Osprey (which has a good spare parts service too). He has a couple of different sizes depending on the trip.

Firstly, what sort of trip is he going on? If he's going on a backpacking type trip then a backpack will be fine but if he's going to be based in only one or two places then a suitcase is much more practical and easier to transport. If you're getting a backpack then I agree with definitely taking him to choose it because they're too heavy to fit badly and be uncomfortable! I would get one that unzips all the way round so it opens more like a suitcase, otherwise you spend all your time turfing things out to reach the stuff at the bottom. If he's flying I'd also try and get one with as few straps as possible, and some have a panel you can zip the shoulder straps into, as airlines don't like them because the straps have a risk of catching on baggage belts.
