New Zealand: Camper van or car?

I’m planning a trip to New Zealand for February/March 2026. We’ll be staying just over 4 weeks, flying into Auckland and out of Christchurch. I’m struggling to decide whether to hire a campervan or a car. We have our own small campervan at home and enjoy camping. However it’s looking like a car and motels might work out cheaper for this trip. Would we be missing out if we didn’t hire a van?

Lucky you, you’ll have a wonderful trip. I lived in NZ. The motels are great so using a car between them works well, but my preference would be a motor home every time. It’s more flexible and you don’t have to keep unpacking and packing plus you can self cater and save money that way. Hope that helps.

NZ is quite a rainy place. When we had our holiday we had a car and booked into motels for several days at a time. This was so that if we got rained off on Day1 we still had Day2 or Day3 to see / do stuff. Never did get to do the Tongariro crossing, though. Nor whale-watching.Sad
If you have a campervan you have, I presume, more flexibility in staying (if raining) or moving on (if item ticked off the list).

We did NZ with a car and air bnbs but we stayed each location 3 days or so.

It actually worked out cheaper.

Are your flights already booked?
We got car hire way cheaper going from South Island up to North as most do it the opposite way around so they need the cars back to the North.
We had 2 days around Auckland to get over jet lag then internal flight to Christchurch.

Many of the roads in the South Island off the main highways are gravel tracks so was glad to be in 4x4 type vehicle.

Definitely recommend looking up Kaikora penguin evenings limited numbers and only run a few dates per month but was incredible.

Does anyone know how far ahead I’m likely to need to book accommodation at that time of year?

Can I ask what you went for in the end? Having the same quandary myself.
