Lisbon for family with teens

We haven’t been abroad much - family of 4 with kids 13 and 15. I’d like us to go to Portugal this summer, and stay in a self catered place ideally with access to a pool.
We would like to be able to enjoy day trips to Lisbon. Ideally 45-60 mins or less, either train in or maybe drive, I don’t know.
where do I start in terms of areas? please can anyone advise??
we like walking, visiting new places. We are NOT into sub bathing on beaches!
budget around £1700 ish for accommodation if poss

Is there a reason you don’t want to actually stay in Lisbon?

Go to Sintra

Yes, go to Sintra. Best day trip ever. It's amazing.

Look at Cascais. It’s a 30 minute train ride from the centre of Lisbon. Plenty of hotels, villas and apartments with pools. Plenty of places to eat and it has a few museums and galleries of its own.
You can get to Sintra easily from there by car or bus and it’s well worth the trip.

When you say 'this summer', did you mean next year?

Another vote for Sinatra. We stayed in Lisbon but went for a day trip to Sintra. It was lovely and had everything - beaches, cafes, shops, beautiful architecture and is about a 50 minute train ride into Lisbon. I would opt to stay in Sintra if I went again.

We are flying to Lisbon next summer and staying in Cascais.. 30 mins by train from Lisbon. 🙂

We cisted for a short break with our tweens. Stayed in Lisbon and loved it but next time we want to stay in Cascais. Sintra was a highlight for us.

Thank you all! Much appreciated
sorry I mean summer next year
my gut feeling was avoid Lisbon as before for city breaks it’s felt enough being in a city after 3-4 nights? So I thought a smaller place might feel more relaxing for a week and then can visit Lisbon? Also I thought it might be harder to have access to a pool in a big city from my initial search on Bookimg.com

I wouldn't stay in Sintra. It's fabulous for a day trip but so busy, crammed with tourists even at this time of year. I was there a couple of weeks ago. The trains are great for covering longer distances. Cheap, clean and very frequent. They fill up fast though so be prepared to stand for a bit.
