First time in years we have the opportunity to go away childfree in May next year.

But, no idea where to go

Thinking a city break- Rome, Palma or Berlin?

We're late 40s

Suddenly feel overwhelmed with options

Where would anyone recommend and where would you stay

Done many many city breaks. Seville is my favourite and May would be lovely. Stay near the cathedral.

Rome was great, lots to do. We also enjoyed Malaga, much smaller but with city beach and opportunities for day trips out of town and dolphins trips.

We loved Lisbon

Another vote for Seville or Malaga. Riga, Budapest or Bratislava are lovely too.

Rome is my favourite place in the world, although 3 days is nowhere near enough.

Start with where you can fly to from your nearest airport? What times are the flights?
Is weather an issue?
Does it clash with any major events in certain countries?
Are there budgetary constraints?
What do you actually like to do? That's probably the most important, because these are different kinds of holidays.
Do you have any reliable recommendations for hotels?

Wherever you go, you have limited time, so spend as much as you can afford on being central/near the main sights. Location is always the number one priority (don't stay near the railway station in Rome for instance).
Look at somewhere like the Times or Telegraph travel pages online for good city hotel suggestions.

If none of these criteria help you to narrow it down, just put the names of places on bits of paper and draw one out of a hat. If you're pleased with what you draw, book it. If you're a bit disappointed, keep drawing names until you get the happy feeling!

Valencia, Zadar, Pula, Poznan….all around 15 mins from airport …..cheap flights ( from Manchester or Liverpool where I am anyway) ..l.smallish cities…..easy to get round….good weather from May to October….friendly….not over touristy

For 3 days look for a short flight early as possible and an airport directly at the destination, you don't want to spend ages travelling.

Do you want more a general visit with looking around, food, cafe culture or are you interested in arts, music, history and happy to walk for hours?

Check if there is any major event in your destination, any public holidays which may impact opening times. Germany for example has lots of museums closed on Mondays.
