Hello, just looking for some information and ideas on booking a holiday to Japan. We would like to see Tokyo and ideally Kyoto, Osaka etc. Has anyone been with kids? Did you do it all yourself or did you go through a travel company? If you went through a travel company, Did you find it any good and who did you use?

If you did it DIY style, then any tricks and tips? And how much did it cost you if you don’t mind me asking?

There's a couple of really informative threads about travel to Japan. Most people have 'done it themselves' but I think there are a few who have bought a package. Cost will be dependent on hotel choices, travel choices, food choices, how many of you there are etc. Lots have been with kids and they will give you better advice than I would for example as we went as a couple (adult DS joined us part way through) so we would have differnt hotel advice for example.

Have a look at part 1 here and part 2 here . There's lots to take in. You might be better off sharing your plans so far and getting feedback. How old are your DC?

We went last Easter mine were 11 and 14 we booked it all ourselves. Well DH did!
We flew Manchester to Dubai then on to Tokyo -

then to Yamanouchi, Matsumoto, Takayama, Kanazawa, Hiroshima and then Kyoto.

It was immense, totally recommend it.

We got trains we got a subway pass for Tokyo and then if you go and see them at the station at Tokyo airport they’ll help you plan what other tickets you need for overland trains and the fast trains (which are worth it for the experience), we also took a couple of coaches as well, which were nice as we got different scenery.

Although we do have friends with 3 kids same ages that hired cars and mainly drove.

I think all in we spent around £16k. That included everything, including all the Pokémon!, trips we didn’t do loads but enough. We found eating out very reasonable, but some days we literally just went into a store and bought a sandwich or omgrini and drink and had that rather than restaurants all the time.
