Which part of the city are you going to?

What is your budget?

I always stay at the Novotel Central. Which is a couple mins walk from the central station. Reasonable price and lovely breakfast.

I used to travel to Hamburg for work and always stayed at the Steigenberger.

I've booked a Premier Inn as it has a fridge and is just off the main Reeperban, I looked at some more traditional German hotels but thought they could be noisy on the main drag

We are going to an event on the Reeperban so wanted to be close, I accept it won't be everyone's cup of tea

I liked the Aussen Alster Hotel in St Georg.

We stayed in the Movenpick. The hotel is brilliant, but the area is a bit’edgy’.

Motel One is a pretty consistent chain in Germany- I have stayed in them all over including one in Hamburg and it was fine. Not the prettiest location (Hamburg is blighted by big roads through the centre) but would book again. My family like the breakfast.

We stayed in the 25Hours Hotel in the harbour area of the Altstadt. It was amazing and I'd totally recommend it.

Glad you have lots of good suggestions, I would not stay at the Hampton again, if helps you rule it out. It is a standard enough boring hotel, nothing wrong with it, slightly out of town. But booked it due to a short-ish 10 minute walk through to Central Station to get train to airport, and if you are taxi-ing about, or prepared to take the longer walk, then all fine. But if you do take the short cut, it is like being in the cast of Thriller.

Thank you for all these - so helpful. We’re meeting my son who’s showing us around the city so I’ll check with him what area would work best from his ‘tour guide’ (!) POV
