i had booked a family holiday to mabel thorpe because a friend has just moved up there and i’d like to see her. my husband has done some research and concluded that it’s not a very nice area.
i don’t want to get into being offensive to people who live there or like it for holidays but what other areas near chapel
st leonard’s might pass the husband
filter please? we don’t know the area at all!

I think that we need to know why your husband thinks that its "not a very nice area" before any suggestions can be made.

To be honest nothing near the coast is “nice”. I mean there’s some lovely deserted beaches like Mogs Eye but the actual “places” are all very similar. You could go inland for some day trips I guess, Louth (very small market town) or even Lincoln.

sutton on sea is ok. What exactly is your husbands issue?

kennycat · 12/10/2025 16:09

i think he thought it was a bit run down and not like a scenic village like he was expecting. He’d like there to be some nice pubs and/or restaurants nearby too i think.

Depends how long you’re going for and how far you’re prepared to drive I guess. Alford I think has some ok pubs but haven’t been there for years. Woodhall Spa is nice but 45 mins away. There’s nice pubs in quite a few of the villages in the wolds. The Splash in Little Cawthorpe had a good reputation.

Mablethorpe is definitely not scenic. Sutton on sea is sweet and very twee looking but not particularly pretty . Chapel St Leonard’s is a sea of caravan parks and Ingoldmells is a theme park . Having said that they all share the same lovely beach . There are isolated beaches all along the coast and a big car terrace at Hutoft . If you must have scenic then Louth and Woodhall Spa are both pretty and not a huge drive from the coast .

I know Mablethorpe well . It’s got a lovely beach but the town itself is a bit rough . Sutton on Sea ( within walking distance ) is much nicer. Louth is a lovely town about 15 /20 minutes away, there’s a great pub at Little Cawthorpe that you can stop at for food on the way . Alford isn’t far away and quite pretty too
Lincoln is beautiful but it’s about an hour away

suburburban · 12/10/2025 16:37

Louth is lovely and 20 minutes away. Great town centre

Mabelthorpe is ok but has become tacky over the years

Sparkletastic · 12/10/2025 16:38

You are very close to Anderby Creek and we’ve had two lovely holidays there. Another vote for Louth which is great too.

isitmyturn · 12/10/2025 17:55

Mablethorpe has a good beach but like all coastal towns it's run down.
Distances are deceptive in Lincolnshire as there are no motorways and lots of windy country roads.
This is a very nice upmarket place with lodges and a pool not too far

I live in Lincolnshire and quite frankly in comparison to some other sea side towns in the UK Mablethorpe is nice. It’s not the best but far from the worst. We visited Blackpool a couple of years ago and it was dire. There are lots of pretty little villages near Mablethorpe. Louth is lovely as are other small towns and villages. The Lincolnshire wolds are very pretty. If you’re staying at Golden Sands it’s functional.

TeaAndStrumpets · 12/10/2025 20:17

If you don't mind a half hour drive Horncastle is interesting. Good for antiques (or was) and lots of cafes, pubs. The same as Louth. I love the little independent food shops and bakeries in all these market towns. Make sure you stock up on Lincolnshire plum bread!
There are some very nice beach huts to hire by the day at Sutton on Sea, just nice for making tea and sitting out of the wind. DD took her boys in the summer, they loved it.

North Sea Observatory at Chapel St Leonard’s is lovely - great cafe on the beach. Go at high tide if you can.

This is a hidden Gem and a must for me i drive over an hour just for a breakfast trip on occasion

Its not a wealthy area but the coast line is stunning.

There are some lovely villages in the wolds, Lincoln is a nice City to visit.

If you like walking, there are some lovely places

When are you going?

TeaAndStrumpets · 12/10/2025 22:19

East Kirkby Aviation Heritage Centre is so atmospheric, and in a beautiful setting.

suburburban · 13/10/2025 11:43
