Hello, we will be heading to Barcelona for the first time to meet our son who is studying in Spain (not Barcelona !) What are some good things to do over this period? Slightly off the tourist trail. Also is any restaurant open on Christmas Day (I know to pre book) ?

Santa Maria de Montserrat you have to get the train out of Barca but it id worth it litetally stunning. You gey a cable car up the mountain....ps we went in January.

Not particularly non-touristy but we did a “Ghosts and Crime” (or something like that) tour in the old part of Barcelona which was excellent. The tour guide was very knowledgeable, funny and gave us great tips on where to eat/drink. Best evening tour we have been on.

We went in November and I was surprised how busy it was. You need to really plan ahead and book (which fortunately we had done). I imagine Christmas would be far worse. The other Tip is there is so much to see and do don’t try and see everything.

Finally Sagrada Familia, for me, was amazing (but I appreciate that it isn’t for everyone) it helped that we had been to the museum in Reus (on an earlier trip) and learnt a little about it beforehand.
