I'm considering a completely out of my comfort zone (but indulgent) holiday, ideas welcome

Backstory is that I don't really like my birthdays so I haven't celebrated for a few years. I did say to family that I will celebrate my 60th which is in 18 months time, but honestly I can't be arsed. So it would suit me to be out of the country, possibly on the other side of the world. I quite fancy a ranch, I don't know why I've just always liked the idea of ranches, possibly too many romance novels featuring rugged cowboys. I would go for Canada but my birthday is Feb/March so not a great time of year for that. So I'm eyeing up Argentina, or other South American countries.
I really like the look of this one, https://estanciacristina.com/stay/ or this http://www.estancialospotreros.com.

Anything else? What are your wildest dreams? I would love Antarctica but I get horrendously sea sick. I don't cope all that well with hot humidity (I married a Malaysian before visiting Malaysia and realising that I struggled with the climate, should have gone for an Icelander Grin).

My dream 60 th is either Bhutan or 5 weeks in south America. I’m very torn. I’ve been to Peru but nowhere else in SA….

a friends greatest ever holiday was on a ranch in Argentina, she loved it, she was veggie when she left but came back a confirmed steak eater!

Looks heavenly

I get sea sick and I used to be in the navy and I’m now crew on a lifeboat. Kwells work wonders!

The artic is where I’d love to go.

foxychox · 01/10/2025 07:02

Do it, you will not regret it! I travelled solo a lot in my 30s and was petrified the first time I went to Asia. However I met lots of like minded people and had a ball! Central Asia is on the wish list for my 60th….

ACynicalDad · 01/10/2025 07:04

Something in Mongolia?

InTheNotswolds · 01/10/2025 08:35

Dream destinations? Argentina, Rwanda, Botswana, Bhutan, Khamchatka, Kalash Valley (Pakistan), Papua New Guinea... I couldgo on for a loooooong time.

We did a road trip in Argentina a few years ago. It was amazing. Stayed in Buenos Aires then flew to salta drove down to Mendoza then back to BA. It was fantastic. We stayed on ranches and vineyards along the way. Scenery is wonderful great food and wine. Lovely people.

Those look like amazing trips, OP!
Happy travels! I hope you will have a lovely birthday.

Perhaps let your family know in advance that you won't be home, so they don't spend time and money on a celebration that you will not attend.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 01/10/2025 13:15

@SkaneTos I will tell them, but everyone knows I hate surprises so no worry about a party being organised.

@BadActingParsley I went to Bhutan a couple of years ago and I think it's my favourite place that I have ever been. It's just glorious. I don't know that it would be ideal in February though.

@Rhubarbandgooseburycrumble My motion sickness is very bad and always has been, Kwells have never worked. The only thing that ever worked was Dramamine and that knocked me out completely, you don't feel sick if you're fast asleep. My parents were very keen sailors so I had a lot of summer holidays small boat cruising. Even on fairly calm days I had two modes, throwing up or asleep. I would absolutely love to do a cruise from North Norway around Svalbard, but it just wouldn't work for me.

I am investigating all the other destinations mentioned above, thank you. I think if I were to go to Africa again I would like to go to Namibia, it just seems so strange and extreme. February would be a bad time to go though, hot and lots of rain.

I’ve got Antarctica on my list, but all the videos of the Drake Passage give me the willies, + ££££££££ so not likely to happen ever.

I am looking at a trek to Everest Basecamp https://www.britishexpeditionco.co.uk/everest-base-camp

I love adventure-ish holidays, but DH doesn’t so I might just do it on my own.

We are going to Tromso next year for my birthday and half looked at adding Svalbard but decided against it in the end.

I want to travel around Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia in the next couple of years - sort of get a flight and see where we end.

I also want to do a road trip to the Dolomites next year - not particularly indulgent, but I want to get away from hotel/beach holidays and travel around a bit more.

Everest base camp sound amazing, probably beyond my abilities though and I do like to have a luxurious bathroom available at all times. Grin Plus I'm trying to persuade DH to come with me, as far as I can remember we haven't had a holiday by ourselves for a couple of decades, and he hates the cold or snow because he's from the tropics.

I’m seriously considering northern India, the classic Rajasthan bits, and a hill station for my 50th.

Probably beyond my capabilities too to be honest, but it does say you don’t need to be very fit in the blurb as it’s a slow pace. I did find another company who drive you in, which is probably more up my street, but they don’t go from Nepal.

My DH also hates cold and snow but I love it. We went to Iceland a few years ago and I absolutely loved the place and I’m desperate to go back, but he’s not so keen. I put my foot down about Tromso as it’s my 50th and I went where he wanted to go for his 50th.

I’m quite into road trips at the moment and have a list, but he’s not so keen.

Massive vote for wildflower hall in kufri (above Shimla and much much nicer). We spent the run up to Christmas there once and it was one of my favourite holidays ever. Tho’ Bhutan also amazing if you fancy a detour.

Argentina sounds amazing. Depending on how confident people are travelling abroad, might be worth considering joining a group like Exodus or Explore. I had a fab solo trip to SE Asia recently with exodus. Having spent years doing holidays in France, now getting a taste for places further afield.
