23kg luggage allowance for 4 night trip for me and one dc - do I need one or two suitcases?

newyorknewyorkforevernewyork · 28/09/2025 20:18

I bought one large suitcase but I am thinking whether I need two?

It will hopefilly be a long haul flight over christmas - dc is 6.

One pair of trainers and one pair of crocs for each of us

Joggers and jeans each
Underwear
A couple of jumpers each
Maybe a spare coat

Would you think I should take two suitcases, and have to potentially lug them both about NYC

Or will one suffice?

Tia x

Book tickets in advance (online) for the Rockettes.

Don’t uber. If you are taking a cab get a yellow one at the airport. Those that are saying $70 are forgetting you need to add on tolls and tip. It will be more like $100. However the air train/subway is easy but appreciate you have a little one
who may be tired. Unless your dd is very tall she may well ride for free as it’s based on height.

Have you booked a hotel yet?

NY is expensive. Do you have an Itinery planned?

American Girl shop is an experience just be warned that dolls start around $135, the shop is something else! They have lots of ranges like the historical dolls, girl of the year and truly me (you can choose one that looks like you)

Everything is booked, hopefully it goes ahead well, super anxious 😄🙈

Agree that dd might appreciate a taxi

I think i'd plan to take a few hundred in cash then, for things like tipping and the cab

Planned Itinerary should nothing go wrong:

Rockettes
Christmas lights
Ferry
Sights
Macys and other christmassy shops
Central park
Bryant park
Cheap eats

Maybe visit brooklyn

That's bit really. I'm not expecting to be able to do loads but would like to see the rockerfellar tree and empire state building

American girl doll might be a window shop, dd prefers superman anyway right now 😄😄🙈

Omg I cant believe the cost

this may be useful to you.

What time does your flight arrive at JFK?. If you are clearing immigration there you may well be waiting an hour plus in line to be processed. You will have your photograph and fingerprints taken. If your flight lsnds sfter 6pm I would take a yellow cab when you arrive at ground transportation.

Macy’s can sometimes give discounts at the till. Have not used a visitors discount card for some years now. If you do ask for such a card you will need to show a passport (or U.K. photo card driving licence).

This is helpful thank you 🥰

I must sound so dense but I had no idea about fingerprints etc 🙈

I'm planning to do the esta on pay day. That's the last bookable thing

Will definitely ask about this visitors card - would love to buy some perfume or something but not banking on it

One of our DC lived and worked in Manhattan for a year. The food doesn't have to be expensive. You used to be able to get a 'dollar slice' which is (unsurprisingly) a slice of pizza for a dollar. Think it's gone up a bit since then, but not much. That'll help keep costs down. Just don't buy food around Times Square as it's really expensive (it's full of tourists but no idea why, there's nothing there worth seeing).

You can also save money by staying slightly out of the centre, again avoiding tourist traps like Times Square.

Its gonna be super cheap eats, which having a kid who only likes chips and pizza will come in handy 😄

Would tipping be required at the rockettes? Won't be buying food obviously

Book Santa at Macy’s. It’s a really lovely Santa experience.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 29/09/2025 19:04

Your child will also need an ESTA. you are likely aware of that already.

Make sure you have each passport to hand when you go online to fill in the ESTA as you will need to upload the passport to the site. It may take 24 hours or so to approve.

Discounts at Macy’s usually apply to clothes and housewares, not necessarily perfume but they do have a wide selection of perfume. Do also visit the lower basement level.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 29/09/2025 19:06

no tipping is required at the Rockettes because it’s a show without an intermission. Their Christmas show is a NYC tradition.

Yeah esta for both of us, passports done and ready

Super looking forward to macys 😄, and hopefully bloomingdales

Dd wont cope with the ice skating which is a shame but we could still have a look at the tree 😍

If I was going to NYC for 4 days I wouldnt be planning on spending it in shops. Maybe things have changed since I last went pre COVID but a shop is a shop, maybe a bit bigger than here but does a 6 yo want to spend time shopping?

There's so much else to experience, and definitely don't waste time and money buying toiletries, 23kg is absolutely loads of luggage

@newyorknewyorkforevernewyorkdon’t buy travel size toiletries. Primark do empty bottles and jars for £1 for 4/5 and take your usual stuff. I think even Sainsburys and Tesco do them now too.

There are loads of great cheap pizza places around. We all hated McDonald’s, it definitely tastes different to over here. Try Chick-Fil-A and Raising Canes (although every Raising Canes had massive queues). Much tastier burgers.
No one has mentioned this yet, but have you checked whether your hotel has any hidden fees you will be expected to pay after? A lot have a facility fee, which is nightly, and extra city taxes. It’s well known for a lot of hotels over there. You will also most likely have to pay a holding fee of around $50 or so per night that will get refunded when you leave as long as you haven’t trashed your room 😆 Don’t forget tips for housekeeping too if possible.

The Staten Island ferry is free and gives great views of the Statue of Liberty! Also a good park near the ferry terminal for children to run!

Is Macy’s in NY that good? IDK if you want to temper you expectations because the one in Chicago is just a basic dingy department store best used only for the short cut to the pedway so you don’t have to walk outside when it’s chilly… And when I lived there I always used to buy my perfume in Heathrow airport because it was cheaper.

The rockettes are fab though, that will 100% live up to expectations. As will pizza, all the pizzas, NY style is my favourite.

Hope you have a lovely time!

They are smaller than 100ml, perfect for a couple of days. I use them for two weeks.

onlytakesaminute · 29/09/2025 20:01

For the Macy’s Santa they used to take photos on your phone too, you didn’t need to buy the official one unless you want to. Hopefully it’s still the same.

Absolutely this! Loads of small refillable bottles in the supermarkets or on Amazon too.

Yeah I will be taking 10 100ml bottles in the suitcase but do wonder whether I can take additional 100ml bottles in hand luggage? Dd will only drink one brand of squash 😪

Why are you decanting them though, there's no size restriction on what goes in the hold
