23kg luggage allowance for 4 night trip for me and one dc - do I need one or two suitcases?

newyorknewyorkforevernewyork · 28/09/2025 20:18

I bought one large suitcase but I am thinking whether I need two?

It will hopefilly be a long haul flight over christmas - dc is 6.

One pair of trainers and one pair of crocs for each of us

Joggers and jeans each
Underwear
A couple of jumpers each
Maybe a spare coat

Would you think I should take two suitcases, and have to potentially lug them both about NYC

Or will one suffice?

Check the Ts&Cs - tends to be that you can take one suitcase weighing up for 23kg, not two suitcases with a combined weight of 23kg.

soccermomquestion · 28/09/2025 20:20

If I were packing for 4 nights, we would each take hand luggage only though!

HateThese4Leggedbeasts · 28/09/2025 20:20

I'd have a large rucksack ready to use at home and add a bag last minute if I needed the overflow bag. I wouldn't take 2 suitcases.

For a summer holiday I get most of my stuff and 2 DC in 1 suitcase but obviously cold weather stuff is bulkier.

Snap! Hand luggage only.

Whatwouldnanado · 28/09/2025 20:23

One case, handy for bringing goodies home. Pack stuff for the plane in a little rucksack to use in the day while you’re away.

Echobelly · 28/09/2025 20:23

One large case should be fine for your needs and you really don't want two when it's just you and a child, even in winter. I'm not sure you need a large case, a medium one should be just fine for two of you - it's not like they're a baby or toddler needing lots of equipment/clothing changes.

newyorknewyorkforevernewyork · 28/09/2025 20:28

Thanks everyone - @soccermomquestion wouldn't it be amazing if you could combine both of our luggage allowances!

Just thinking realistically, we wont need that many clothes, but will need space for potential xmas presents bought there

I'd have a large holdall as well as my carry on, and a little backpack for my dc to carry tablet, 100ml bottles of squash

And then i'd plan to buy toiletries in ny, i'm sure they have a boots equivalent there at the airport!

One for sure, two is overkill. Like a PP, it would be hand luggage all the way for me but it took me a while to perfect that.

TheLette · 28/09/2025 20:34

One. If you are going over Christmas I'd bring boots instead of crocs and lots of warm things. I went to NYC recently and didn't buy much in the shops, it's quite expensive due to the exchange rate and didn't see anything I couldn't buy in the UK. You won't need a variety of clothing as the weather will be cold, and presumably you won't be going anywhere super fancy with your DC? In which case you can just pack 2 spare trousers and 2 spare jumpers each, then 3/4 tops each, underwear, scarves etc and 1 x PJs.

Pigsmightfly31 · 28/09/2025 20:40

I’d be taking one wheeled cabin case each, you’d be surprised how much fits in. We did this, family of 5, 12 nights in Florida, one cabin bag and a small backpack each. You can all wear your winter fits and winter boots/shoes and you’ll easily fit in a couple of jumpers and trousers. It’s only 4 nights. But toiletries there or if you’re in a hotel they’ll supply.

TeddyBeans · 28/09/2025 20:41

We packed a family of 4 for 5 nights in one 23kg suitcase. You'll be fine with one!

newyorknewyorkforevernewyork · 28/09/2025 20:43

This is the size of suitcase I was thinking - I would want to get one with enough room, especially as dc might want a toy or two ??

Agree that dd would need a pair of boots - i'm not bothered about the cold but boots could make for a nice xmas day outfit i suppose

And then I thought crocs for potentially around the hotel

Agree that we'd just need jeans and joggers, a few jumpers and then a pretty dress each in case we go out

One 23kg case should be plenty. 23kg is a LOT of stuff. Presumably you will also be taking a rucksack in the cabin for your passports, documents, cash, meds, glasses, nightwear, a change of clothes each etc in case your hold bag gets delayed.

DappledThings · 28/09/2025 20:57

We are a family of 4 going away for a week in October and only taking one case of 23kg. You won't need two.

Cantseetreesforthewood · 28/09/2025 21:00

Be VERY careful with a case that size.
You can pack way more than 23kg in it - we used to pack a smaller case in a that sized case to come back to the uk, then fill it with stuff to take back with us. The larger case had to be packed very carefully to keep it under 23kg.

If you dont need to prebook cases, take one, and stuff a fold away holdall in the case on the way out. If you end up buying loads, you can put sone clothes on the hold all to come home.

Ohmygodthepain · 28/09/2025 21:07

23 kg is a lot op.

We travelled to Spain when the kids were younger with 2x 23kg cases for 6 of us and still hugely over packed.

DD and I went to NYC last summer with one 23kg case for 7 nights, still over packed massively and didn't buy much due to the price of stuff - also other than momentoes there's nothing you can buy in NYC that you can't get at home.

Are you seriously each going to wear 3 full washing machine loads of clothing between you for 4 nights?

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 28/09/2025 21:10

It’s 4 days. Who needs a spare coat for 4 days?!

no one needs crocs in New York at that time of year.

I’m with everyone else who says for 4 days it’s hand luggage only. You need;

4x pairs of pants / socks
4x T-shirts
1x PJ’s
spare jumper
spare trousers

buy toiletries in target. There’s a big one not far from time square.

mynameiscalypso · 28/09/2025 21:12

I go away with my six year old DS for similar trips and we usually manage with one 23kg suitcase between us and that generally has room for stuff that we buy when we’re away. That said, we’re also going to New York (albeit with DH too) soon and planning a suitcase each but that’s partly because we’re doing lots of different things and because I need my fill of Old Navy jeans.

This is excellent advice

Dc should be taking a kids sized backpack but I can take a holdall in the suitcase and and have it as her hand luggage if we need to on the way back?

😭😭 its true, I will only need one

Will toys be that much more expensive?

Its true that there is nothing there that I cant buy in the uk - maybe some stuff from sephora

We take one medium sized case for 3 adults plus hand luggage each for 10 or more days - admittedly in warm weather but I'm sure one case would be plenty for you and a small child. And easier to handle. Wear you heavier shoes / boots and coat on the plane to save weight. BTW our medium case easily takes 23 kgs. We spread heavier items between all bags.

onlytakesaminute · 28/09/2025 21:33

I would take a big suitcase rather than two as it will be easier for you to handle
with your dc. Just be careful not to overpack.

Are you getting a cab or taking the air train/subway from the airport to hotel?

I would agree that it’s unlikely that there are any bargains to be had shopping wise but you may find stuff that’s not available over here

TheCurious0range · 28/09/2025 21:35

We've just been away for 4 days for a wedding in Europe, me, DH and ds one 23kg case between us and that had to include a suit, DS' wedding attire, my dress, shoes we wouldn't usually take with us on a short break and full size toiletries, 3 types of suncream , straighteners etc case was full and weighed 19kg. I don't think you need more than 23kg! We also all took a small backpack mine had jewellery some emergency make up in case our luggage disappeared, a dress, sandals, swimsuit, a book, clean pants, DHs had books a big jumper flipflops, chargers and opal fruits, DS' had his yoto mini, headphones a book, a comic and a small cuddly dinosaur, we all had refillable water bottles and sunglasses. That was easy jet so the hand luggage allowance is small
