Best European city breaks for art galleries / museums?

What would you say are the best European cities for art galleries and museums?

If it makes any difference, I'd be more interested in modern and / or contemporary art than classical stuff.

Thanks in advance!

I think London beats everywhere, then Amsterdam.

tanstaafl · 26/09/2025 17:19

Part of Berlin is called Museum Island, 5 major museums there IIRC.
thats apart from the smaller ones related to post war German history.

Everywhere that’s been mentioned, but my most recent art trip was to Madrid, and it was wonderful. I spent literally all day, every day in the Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza and Reina Sofia,

DownThePubWithStevieNicks · 26/09/2025 17:23

Copenhagen, Stockholm, Nice, Rotterdam, Warsaw, Glasgow, Hamburg.

Yes, that's what I did when I went to Madrid. It was incredible.

I agree with most of these places - London, Amsterdam, Madrid, Malaga, Berlin, Paris - i expect Vienna is great, I just haven't been there yet, whereas I have been to all of the others, sometimes specifically for art.

Is there any particular artist or movement you're interested in? That might help give more specific ideas. Or you will just have to do a grand tour...

No specific artists or movements... I'm essentially just a basic b!tch who likes looking at pictures! 😂

Thanks, all! Lots of really helpful suggestions here.

Florence for the Uffizi

chipsticksmammy · 26/09/2025 20:50

Glasgow - they are all free and you can hop
on the train to Edinburgh for some tremendous museums as well.

Byllis · 26/09/2025 21:06

For sheer variety in museums and quality modern art and photography, I’d have to say London.

My favourite museum city overall has to be Rome followed very closely by Athens as I love ancient history. I know you’ve said that isn’t your thing so much, but if you find yourself there, I’d really recommend the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens as it has had a huge influence on modern art and is very far removed from classical Greek art.

toycat · 26/09/2025 22:10

Bilbao had great stuff at the Guggenheim, but didn't make it to any other galleries there so can't vouch

London is pretty great for galleries

ButterPiesAreGreat · 26/09/2025 22:25

Barcelona has the Miro foundation, the Picasso museum, and others, like MNAC, which is actually church frescoes recreated in church like spaces.
Brussels has some good ones.
Not going until next year but Oslo has some galleries, including one dedicated to Munch.

savvy7 · 26/09/2025 22:27

It's Renaissance art but the Uffizi in Florence is amazing.

JDM625 · 26/09/2025 22:36

I'm personally more into museums than art galleries but enjoyed Madrid, Edinburgh and or course London for both galleries and museums.

Mainly for museums Berlin- the museum island but also Brussels. I had no idea the museum there would be so massive and spent the entire day there. I also went to a music museum there which was fascinating.
