Booked a flight with Ryanair, have I made a mistake?

I’ve booked a flight with Ryanair and now it feels like all I’m getting is horror stories. Bags being turned away even though they fit, delays, cancellations, no replacement flights etc.

have I made a mistake?! I’m stuck now because I can’t cancel and get a refund, but am I going to end up having the worst time of my life

It'll be fine. Just check how much baggage you're allowed to take on with you and don't take more than that. It's no frills but a perfectly reasonable airline for a cheap flight. Just don't expect glamour 😂

TwoBlueFish · 25/09/2025 12:53

I’ve flown with RyanAir lots of times. As long as you check in online and make sure your bags are the right size then you’ll be fine. They’re a budget airline and like trying to upsell but they’re absolutely fine.

JurassicPark4Eva · 25/09/2025 12:54

Used them for years, never had a problem. Check the luggage rules for your ticket and comply with them, you'll be fine.

Delays and cancellations happen to every airline. Ryanair are not the worst on the list:

And always have the best travel insurance policy available.

DontReinMeIn · 25/09/2025 12:54

My bags fit within their current bag policy but apparently they’re changing it?!

It will get you from a to b . Noluxury. Take the right size bag for your booking.

notnorman · 25/09/2025 12:55

Use them once per month. They’re fine. Like a bus but in the air.

They’ve made the allowed size of carry on slightly bigger recently.

MellowPinkDeer · 25/09/2025 12:56

I wouldn’t fly with them unless they paid me too! Good luck OP!

We just had to pay extra on easyJet because we didn’t calculate the centimetres for the wheels on one of our small cabin bags. Next time we’ll just pay for large cabin bags, I think.

I’m flying out on easyJet and my bag fits their large bag, but I’ve never been checked. I’ve paid extra for bags and the speed boarding so im hoping that works in my favour

I've flown with them approx monthly over the past year as they did the exact route I needed to visit an elderly parent who had been v unwell.

Hate to tempt fate but I've never really had a problem with them (and have been using them for decades). I usually just take hand luggage and have invested in bags that are the exact right size. I very often just have the small underseat bag.

InMyHealthyEra · 25/09/2025 17:43

In 10 years of travelling with Ryanair I’ve never had an issue

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 25/09/2025 17:49

Just stick to their rules, you'll be fine.

Flights are basic as hell but provided you stick to Ts&Cs they'll do. I've flown with them a lot without problems.

It will be fine
treat it like a bus in the air
don’t fall foul of the luggage sizes and buy food before boarding
I’ve done a few flights with Ryanair and two this year which were both fine and on time

indoorplantqueen · 25/09/2025 18:03

I fly with them at least 4 times a year. Follow their baggage policy and you’ll be fine.

notacooldad · 25/09/2025 18:10

Follow the rules and you'll be fine.
Its as simple as that.

Just keep up to date and check everything nearer fly date.
Ive used them for years. It can get a bit rowdy on the stag/ hen destinations which can be annoying but I've had flights to Morocco, Norway,Brussels etc with no problem.

Ive only had one significantly delayed flight in all my years of flying with them. The captain wasnt happy with something about the plane and after an hour we had to get off.

People were irritated but id rather be with a pilot that was 100% happy. Within a day I got an email from Ryanair telling me that I had a claim. My compensation was just short of 10 x the ticket price! Happy days!

samarrange · 25/09/2025 21:35

I have taken over 100 flights with Ryanair. Only ever had one problem, a broken engine that had to be changed before take-off, and that was in 2012.

People don't go on social media to say that they had a flight without problems, and Ryanair are the biggest airline in Europe, so they have the most complaints just by sheer number of passengers.

Regarding the cabin bags, the size that has increased is the free underseat bag, from 40x25x20 to 40x30x20. The bigger "wheely" bag is still limited to 55x40x20. Go and measure your bag now, using the longest interpretation of each dimension (e.g., including the handle, the wheels, etc). If it is 56x40x20, or 55x41x20, or 55x40x21, then get a different bag. There is no "slack" or "wiggle room" when they make you jam it in the sizer. Not only is it expensive to have to pay £75 to put your bag in the hold, it is also embarrassing because it's easy to avoid the problem.

Lemintonic · 25/09/2025 21:40

Oh do shhh. We fly ryanair twice a year at least and as long as you get the luggage right, get there on time and don't expect anything fancy you'll be fine

Yes, it's 20+ years for me and I have rarely had an issue. If it wasn't for Ryanair I wouldn't have been to half the places I've been to in my lifetime!

CeeJay81 · 26/09/2025 07:16

Just been away on Ryanair and noones bags were checked. I was a bit worried cause I bought some stuff at duty free on the way back. So had a carrier bag with me too. My bag is one of those that are specifically made to fit the requirements though. You can get them for £20 on Amazon.

The bag I’m planning on taking is 3cm too tall, but also won’t be stuffed full so I’m hopeful it’ll fit! It’s just a pain that they’re so stringent when realistically it won’t make a difference

If it's a squishy bag rather than a solid one you cant squish down, it'll be fine. I fitted extra carrier bag under there along with my bag.
