ive had some hip pain and am awaiting a scan. Forgot take our travel cover for upcoming trip and now can’t get undiagnosed conduit covered.
Travelling to canaries so assume ghic card applies. Wondering if I should postpone trip until after diagnosis?

There will be a specialist insurer who would cover the trip, for a fee, or excluding potentially related claims such as falls but cover theft, loss of luggage, delays etc . GHIC is fine for acute care but not prolonged stays or repatriation.

I wouldn’t. Is it likely to be osteo arthritis? Whatever it is, few causes of hip pain have treatments that start right away and ‘cure’.
Is the pain such that it would spoil your trip or is it just the lack of insurance issue?

Aligirlbear · 22/09/2025 17:24

Personally wouldn’t. The GHIC will only cover acute care so if you are unfortunate enough to say trip up and get a complex fracture - you might get it set but anything else like a long term stay for traction or needing repatriation this wouldn’t be covered - is it worth the risk if you can postpone until diagnosis ? I would postpone.

My god! I had hip pain for years, went to chiropractor/osteopath and never even thought of telling insurance. I had an x Ray to rule stuff out but they didn't find anything, so I suppose it's still undiagnosed. It just shows how careful you need to be with insurance.

My osteopath has finally cured me, she thinks it was a misaligned pelvis. After r years of pain it's great to be pain free.

Notsurewhattnow · 22/09/2025 18:13

@Chewbecca it’s just the lack of insurance. Pain is a bit annoying but doesn’t stop me doing anything.

I probably would go, as long as I was pretty sure I would be mobile and could get on a plane ok to come back. I would just get a GHIC and risk it, but that's just me. I'd only do that if the pain is fairly stable though, and not getting worse day by day.

I believe allclear may cover people waiting for tests but I wonder if you just won’t be covered for any hip related problems whilst you’re away
