Looking for recommendations for UK holiday ideas for the May half term. Near the coast, lots of things to do for an 8 yo, lodge type accommodation that's baby friendly maybe with a hot tub. Anyone done a trip like this?
Don't fancy Centre parks or Bluestone

An idea of location would be good as you don’t want to be travelling 8 hours presumably

Forgottenmyphone · 13/09/2025 07:06

We’ve got Landal Gwel al Mor in Cornwall booked for October. The range of activities looks pretty good.

OnTheRoof · 13/09/2025 09:54

What is it you don't fancy about Bluestone and CP? Because based on your description you could do worse than a Haven or Butlins, but maybe you wouldn't like those either?

I think you probably need to work out also whether you want the things to entertain the 8 year old to be on site, or if you prefer a quieter location and to travel to nearby attractions.

Where are you in the country? I'd say the ideal distance away would be 2/3 hours from home, ie somewhere that's too far for a day trip, but not so far that you lose a day at each end of the holiday to travel. Plus costs less for petrol/train fares.

We mainly go abroad for holidays, but I've vowed to have at least a short break in the UK every year as well as there's so many places I want to see more of. This year we've been to mid Wales, near Machynleff and spent time walking in the hills but also went to the coast and swam in the sea, although that would be a bit cold in May. We've also been to the north Wales coast near Prestatyn. In future I want to go to Northumbria and West of Scotland. The Yorkshire coast is fab, but that's a day trip for us as not much more than an hour away.

Searles in Hunstanton Norfolk is fantastic (but expensive)

Littlebigcat · 13/09/2025 20:58

Northumberland, Whitby/Robin hoods bay, North Wales (love Anglesey and Porthmadog/Harlech). Or Pembrokeshire. Depends where you're travelling from but all of those have had plenty to do for an 8yo and we'd return to any. Can't recommend any specific lodges as we normally camp or rent a cottage (most cottage sites have an option for filtering for hot tubs).

Kelling Heath in Norfolk is fab. Or Sandy Balls in the New Forest

Bainland Lodges in Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire. Lovely lodges, walking distance to a small town with a great park, activities in the resort, swimming pool. Not on the coast but not far away!

Jok77 · 13/09/2025 21:25

Northumberland is absolutely beautiful, gorgeous sandy beaches with very few people around. Hemera Holidays are good value!

Rachel63 · 13/09/2025 21:34

Felmoor Park in Northumberland is fab, the lodges have hot tubs and it’s right next to Northumberland Zoo (and other attractions such as Alnwick Castle & Gardens, Llidori, Sea Houses where you can go on a puffin boat trip, Holy Island, Whitehouse Farm, Woodhorn Colliery Museum) definitely worth a look if it’s within travelling distance for you.

Messycoop · 13/09/2025 22:25

Zipworld lodges wales looks ace, planning on booking for a winter break in February.

wellingtonsandwaffles · 13/09/2025 22:52
