Weekend break

Hello
My husband and I have a Friday Saturday Sunday ( nights ) to have a weekend break
We live in Dorset
We could to Thursday after work but we need to be back Monday as husband in work the Tuesday morning
Thinking Cardiff ....enough to do ?
We will be driving
Any thoughts on areas or places to stay ?
This is the end of October
Any help would be gratefully received
Total accommodation budget would be £500 for the 3/4 nights ...more if it was a dinner bed n breakfast situation!

Like wandering around local shops cafes
Maybe a spa pool etc
Bit of history or NT type places
