May half term short haul with teens. What’s been a good holiday for you?

We usually do holidays that are ‘hard work’ - lots of travel, city breaks, busy and active. Often camping in UK or France or self catering.
Always come back tired and needing a holiday, although we enjoy ourselves.
DH and I are getting a bit old for it and wonder if something that’s a bit more relaxed would be good.
Any successes?

Yep agree with @foodtoorder, Tenerife is one of our go to destinations in May, can be as active or as chilled as you like and we’ve always had good weather. We have also enjoyed UAE and Madeira.

Ours aren’t teens quite yet but we’ve had a few good May half term holidays that are city break/sightseeing followed by beach or hotel with pool. So half and half active/relaxing.

Rome then Tuscany, Venice then Lake Garda, North coast of Crete have all been good for this. Crete especially if you want mostly relaxing with a bit of sightseeing.

Planning Sicily for next May. Other options on my list: Barcelona & Sitges, Athens plus a nearby island, Dubrovnik or Split & nearby beach/island.

Sicily is a great option

We’re going to Alghero in Sardinia next May when DS will be 12. The plan is to laze on the beach, do the odd boat trip and explore the old town.

I was going to say Sicily too. You could do a combination of sightseeing and beach. The Godfather tour is good. Trip up Etna. Alcantara Gorge. Taormina and Ortigia are both gorgeous. I have Cefalu on my to do list.

are any you sporty or into activities?

Handeyethingyowl · 06/09/2025 14:46

How do you all book these? Tui/Jet2? If you book privately how do you know how/where is good to book?

I think half active/half beach time is good, like Lisbon and Cascais. The swimming pools and the sea were both pretty cold in May though. This year we went to Port de Soller in Majorca and just chilled for a few days. The sea was on the cool side but swimmable, hotel had a heated pool and was quite pricey, but our kids used it a lot.
