Holland experience
Lots of museums
Heineken tour
Nemo science museum
Canal trip
Coffee shop 😅

Loads to do in Amsterdam

PermanentTemporary · 29/08/2025 06:42

What do you like?

My favourite experience in Amsterdam was the hidden church - Our Lord in the Attic.

It’s not exactly fun but Anne Frank’s house is still unmissable to me.

If you haven’t booked accommodation yet consider staying in Harlem. It’s beautiful and a lot quieter, about 15 mins by train,

BaronessBomburst · 29/08/2025 06:44

Eat pancakes.

If your coming in by ferry, the Amsterdam ferry port is actually in a town called Ijmuiden.
It has a very nice beach with some cute beach bars.
Theres a little van that visits, selling the most delicious fried fish.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 29/08/2025 06:48

Also: theres a country park called the Amsterdam Bos. Dont stay at the "Bostel" however. Its run by the Netherlands answer to Basil Fawlty.
Entertaining but in a bleak way.

We did the art museums in town, and the model village/clog factory/chocolate factory. There was time for another thing (I'd underestimated how easy public transport was TBH)

We stayed at a hotel near the airport and bus/trained in

Human body museum
Heineken tour
Sex museum
Vondelpark
Coffee shops
Febo vending machines are a novelty!
Sit in Dam Square and people watch

MotherOfCrocodiles · 29/08/2025 07:21

If you want to do museums book ahead

I’d spend most of it sitting in Brown cafes preferably by the canals, drinking Special Beers (tripels). the Jordaan area is nice as is the Plantage.

you could get chat GPT to plan an itinerary. It doesn’t allow enough time for things though.

We were there this summer. Hire bikes and ride out through Noord. The Stedelijk museum was our favourite of the art museums. Yy to the church of Our Lord in the Attic.

Also very easy to day trip lots of places from Amsterdam as the transport is great - we went to Antwerp for the Fashion museum.

Foodhallen in Oost was excellent for dinner and drinks.

Silverbirchleaf · 29/08/2025 07:35

Red light district!
Boat trip

BlueEyedBogWitch · 29/08/2025 07:42

Rembrandthuis and the Van Gogh Museum are musts for me.

Canal trip with Those Dam Boat Guys.

Anne Frank House - but book in advance.

Big pancake. Massive steak and chips. Big fat bifter in a coffee shop.

I love Amsterdam.

reluctantbrit · 29/08/2025 08:50

Rembrandhouse
Anne Frank House - you need to pre-book, no walk-in tickets
The hidden church - Our Lord in the Attic
Van Gogh museum

Just walking around, we spent hours discovering little areas.

Vondelpark is a nice place

We liked a boat tour with a really small open boat, we departed near the Rijksmuseum.

If the weather is good, do a day trip, Zaandvoort, Utrecht or Marken

MissAmbrosia · 29/08/2025 09:57

We did the Absolutely Amsterdam walking tour which was fabulous. Learnt a lot about the social history of the city. Canal trip. Wandering round the Jordaan district. Had a great dinner at the Seafood Bar on the Damrak - reservations recommended. Luminair roof top bar on top of the Hilton near the station. We stayed there - breakfast buffet was the best I have ever seen. Cocktails on Rembrandtplein - very lively on a weekend evening.

De Pijp market. Check out the shops behind it, there's an amazing kitchen shop. Go to Hema for cute Christmas stuff and much miffy stuff (nijintje) which is cheaper than the miffy shop. Bijenkorf for windiw shopping in a proper glamorous department store. Their Christmas store is lovely and their restaurant/snack bar/cafe is surprisingly affordable and very good.
