Hawaii or South Africa

If you’ve been to both or either in the UK summer, what did you love?

I don’t want a safari in S.A, just adventure and activities. Is it worth going to Mauritius or somewhere afterwards or would that just cut time unnecessarily?

Hawaii feels like such a long way, but looks appealing. Would July be roasting hot?

Views welcome. Thanks

You will need to break the flight to the Hawaiian islands on the West Coast mainland of the US. Most people fly onto the island they’ve chosen from either LA or San Francisco and the flight duration is just short of 6 hours.

You will also need to stopover on the west coast on the way back to the U.K. Many visitors fly into Honolulu which is Oahu’s main airport and from there head into Waikiki. It’s very much built up there with many hotels and restaurants. Beach areas are nice. Other people fly to Kauai or the Big Island (Hawaii) which are quieter and less built up.

it is hot there in summer but you do get a breeze too.

July is winter in South Africa so choose your location carefully. Cape town can be chilly and rainy then - saying that,
there are loads of other parts which have very mild winters. South Africa is a fabulous destination - do a bit of research and you’ll find a great itinerary. It is also a much shorter flight and only one hour time difference

Hawaii. We went to Maui and it was fab, loads to do. It is a bloody long way.

Hawaii is amazing, but you would need to island hop to fully appreciate the diversity.

Sorry - we visited in September so no experience of the summer.

I went to Hawaii as part of a RTW trip, & was underwhelmed.

A lot to see & do in S.A. I was there in July a few years ago, it was cool & a few days of drizzle, but it really didn't stop me doing anything.

Been to Oahu in July, also been to Johannesburg and Mauritius in July too

Mauritius was freezing in July ! Lovely island but nothing like Oahu! SA is lovely too but where I went was pretty unsafe

lots of stuff to do in Hawaii ! We stayed in resort that had their own dolphins it’s out of this world

Thanks all, I think Hawaii wins it for July travel

Hawaii is expensive in Summer, be careful. We did Maui and Big Island and I would happily go back.

It's 24 hr with a short stoppover or you could make a proper stop for 2-3 days each leg.

@reluctantbrit what activities did you do out of interest?
