Malta in October - where to stay and for how long?

DH and I early 50s. I'm considering Malta in October but don't know much about it. I'd like some sightseeing and good food. Is Malta good for gluten free? I've think I've heard it is. How easy is it to get around the island and where is a good base if we've never been before?

We stayed here:

It's right by Valletta's city walls so the town is easily accessible. I don't know about gluten free but we had lots of lovely meals here.

It's also right by the bus station. It was incredibly easy to get buses. We had planned on renting a car but there was no need. We explored all over the island plus had a day in Gozo, visiting two beaches and Victoria, all by bus.

Have a great trip. It's a lovely place.

And Gozo too. There's history predating the pyramids by over a thousand years.

Which towns are worth staying in to maximise using public transport?
