Ljubljana/Malta?

Trying to think of somewhere we haven’t been before for a short break and wondered if anyone has thoughts on either Ljubljana or Malta?
Early Oct, 4 or 5 nights, older couple

Malta is lovely - we went at that time last year and it was in the high 20s but a pleasant breeze most of the time. It wasn't too busy either. There is so much to do I will have to go back.

Malta is lovely. Particularly Valetta

Ljubljana is great. And there's an easy and cheap public bus to Lake Bled for a day trip. It's probably also possible to go further into the mountains by bus to Lake Bohinj. I hired a car for that though. Wonderful short hikes from there if you're reasonably mobile.

I haven't been to Ljubljana but I have heard it's beautiful.

I went to Malta a year or two ago and it was a great short break. There's quite a lot to do and see because it's one of the most fought over islands in Europe.

The Busy Bees bakery is excellent.

There are also some fascinating neolithic temples.

Malta is one of my favourite countries, the people over there are as amazing as the Island itself. Bugibba is more 'England' orientated but there are some lovely places to stay.

I like both places. Slovenia is beautiful. You only need a night in Ljubljana, it's very small, so could do a trip elsewhere eg to Lake Bled. Malta is nice too, more touristy/busier maybe.

Slovenia is the most beautiful country I've ever seen. What do you look for in a holiday?

Mumblechum0 · 18/08/2025 18:41

Thanks all! In terms of what we're looking for, we're both fit and active (both 62), and love walking in nature but also cafe culture/art/museums so I think probably either would fit the bill!

Been to both.

Ljubljana is nice but you can see the city in a day.

Malta I could easily spend a couple of weeks and not get bored. There’s a lot to do, and places to go see. Weather will probably be nicer too. Would definitely be my recommendation out of the two.

Ljubljana has an amazing cafe culture. Lots of wonderful cafes line the river.

I cycled around Lake Bled, and loved it. When I took my hire bike back, the guy wouldn't take my money because I was so full of enthusiasm! And the views from the mountains above Lake Bohinj are just stunning. I'm not great at uphill walking, but it was fine and absolutely worth it.

Try to be in the city for the food market day. Loads of stalls selling amazing street food.

Malta is very short of greenery. It's basically brown all over, but surrounded by sea.
Slovenia is green with stunning blue lakes.

So choose your colour, really.

I agree. Ljubljana is nice but small. But Slovenia is a beautiful country and nowhere is very far away, especially if you can hire a car. We had a fortnight there and found plenty to do:

  • Lakes Bled and Bohinj
  • Predjama (a castle in a cave)
  • Postonja
  • Loved the coastal town of Piran
  • My personal favourite, bear watching with a guide

we’re going to do both. Slovenia early oct, Malta early dec.
