NYC nightlife/experiences for birthday

Hi,
My dp and I are going to NYC for 4 days in October. It'll be our first trip. We're busy planning it and I've read a few threads on here and have got some good tips.
We're on a budget of sorts but I'd like to treat him for his birthday which is a week before we go.
He loves musicals but we've decided not to buy tickets up front, and just see if we can get them on the day.
I'm looking for ideas for evening/night time activities. Something typical of NYC, not (too) tacky but budget is £200.
We'll be staying near Times Square.
I thought cocktails/dinner at a rooftop place, or a speakeasy with music, maybe both (not necessarily the same night) but would love your recommendations.
Should probably say that we're 52 & 63, so not clubbing!
TIA

250 roof top bar is nice. Or you can get champagne at the top of the edge.

If I can give one piece of advice is don't book anything too late. We did 5 days and were fit for nothing beyond about 8 at night as we were so tired with busy days.

It’s fun to walk or cycle over Brooklyn bridge after dark because Manhatten looks beautiful from the other side all twinkly and lit up. It was warm when we went so we got ice cream and sat eating and admiring the view.

Thank you both for replying, and your recommendations.
I had completely forgotten about this thread.
Getting very excited now!

We loved Refinery roof top bar.

We’re of similar ages and went to NY earlier this year. We absolutely loved the Circle Line Harbour Lights cruise, booked via Go City pass (made it cheaper).

The Edge was fabulous for views, and we went to a rooftop bar which wasn't one of the big popular ones, but had a great view and fab food, I’ll have a look and see if I can find the address.

Check out the ticket booth on Times Square for theatre tickets; great on the day or next-day bargains.

Check out Restaurant Row for great restaurants near TS.

Definitely interested in recs for rooftops!

I hadn't heard of restaurant row, so thanks for that.

Yes, Broadway show may or may not happen. We can go to London whenever, but may only get this one opportunity to do Manhattan at night.

Book a table at one of The Edge restaurants and you will get free entry onto the viewing deck if you spend $40pp.

OldYorkMum · 27/09/2025 10:01

Ah, looks like min. spend has gone up to $60 (50% increase since June!!). Anyway it’s easy to spend that.

LadyLemoncake · 27/09/2025 10:44

Oh my goodness, that would have been perfect!
The only available evening is the day we arrive. 7.15pm table....after getting up at 4 am to go to Heathrow.
I would love it, but I'm worried we'd be falling asleep.
Is it doable, in your opinion?

We did Bar65

Well it will be midnight UK time, but the excitement of being in NYC may push you on!
our friends did the prix fix lunch and had a window table. We booked a spot at the bar and had burgers and a beer, could still enjoy the view but not totally immersed in it whilst eating. But obviously you get to enjoy the deck afterwards. Maybe an option if you think you’ll be too tired to enjoy a full meal?
Very easy to get there on the 7 line subway from Tines Square.

The bar we went to was the Spyglass. Amazing views and I don’t think it was overpriced. We didn’t book (in June) but I think it’s recommended as it’s quite a small bar. Have fun!

We went to an absolutely gorgeous little French restaurant on Restaurant Row, le Rivage, but tbh, there were so many fab looking places there I’m not sure you could find a bad one!

We like to go for dinner on the evening arriving in the US, mainly to stop us falling asleep too early and getting into the right eating timings right away. Just push through the first night and stay up until 930/10 if you can!

LittleLibra · 29/09/2025 12:06

This is a great little speakeasy, delicious cocktails and pizzas
