Where’s a really great city to explore for 2-3 nights? Like the idea of somewhere less obvious than the capitals.

Another vote for Glasgow. One of the friendliest places I've been and loads to see and do. Great architecture, lots of movies are shot there because it can double for New York.

Awh, so much negativity for Plymouth! It’s my adopted city, but it’s really worth a visit; great museums - even one where you can book to go round a submarine, or up a lighthouse! The Elizabethan Barbican, with hidden cobbled streets, a vibrant food scene and a fascinating post-war history.

It was all set to be an international cultural hub in 2020 on the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower, and listed as one of the top 50 places to visit by the New York Times. But in typical Plymovian luck it was, well, 2020, so no one could travel.

its also got the most fantastic train journey there, from Exeter hugging the coast. And an amazing saltwater lido (very cold swimming, mind). And probably the best city views out across the sound… and clotted cream. Oh. And probably the best gin.

plus - almost no tourists.

Sheffield - if you like breweries/cool pubs, music, food, the peak district (climbing, hiking), friendly folk, industrial history...but shhh we like to keep it to ourselves :)

Leeds: shopping, eating out, art gallery (particularly 20th century art), nearby towns such as Harrogate & Ripon, Saltaire, or accessing the Dales

Newcastle: architecture, museums, art galleries (particularly the Baltic), quayside, Angel of the North (Gateshead), easily accessible coast, Roman forts (Wallsend and South Shields), Hadrian's Wall.
