Where’s a really great city to explore for 2-3 nights? Like the idea of somewhere less obvious than the capitals.

Hastings. Funicular railway, caves, live music scene, great seaside promenade walks, exhibitions, restaurants, boutique shops, Elizabethan houses in the Old Town, Regency architecture in St Leonards, beautiful parks, a pier, loads of seafront B&Bs, restaurants, beach cafes....

This post has made me want to visit Hastings.

@Lottapianos I recommend joining ‘Newcastle Foodies’ group on Facebook, and asking for gastro pub recommendations on there. It’s a very active group, so you should get lots of suggestions.

Also, The Grainger Market is excellent for a wander round, with loads of independent little bars, cafes and restaurants. I haven’t been on one, but have heard that there a gastronomy tours from there, and are highly rated.

Agree with PP about Portsmouth - I've had great times there on every visit. So much to see and do.

Lottapianos · 10/08/2025 10:58

Thanks so much @tigerbear, great shout

I like Newcastle but have never thought it as somewhere that’s got loads to offer tourists. What do
folk do for 2-3 days? In my head it’s a shopping and drinking sort of city!

When I’ve been there (I think two weekends in total, now some time ago — I’m not from the UK, and was there because DH had a work event both times), I spent it at the Baltic, the Laing art gallery and some other galleries, including a Louise Bourgeois exhibition at the university gallery, gig at the Sage Gateshead (called something else now, I think?), out to the coast, and to Hexham to see the Abbey and explore some of the more accessible bits of Hadrian’s Wall.

'Definitely Newcastle!
It’s a very ‘foodie’ city, with a very diverse and multicultural restaurant scene, which surprises a lot of people'

You're speaking my language @tigerbear ! I'm a foodie and this is definitely selling it to me 😊 thanks for the high end recommendations - any suggestions for a nice gastro pub type spot, the type where you could get an excellent pie and a great pint or two?

Useful to know that Durham is tiny. Now thinking 2 nights in Durham (one full day) and 3 nights in Newcastle

Nip on the train/metro to Sunderland and go to Propa in sheepfolds. Loads of great food places there and a decent pint, but Propa does the best pies I’ve ever had.

gorgeous beaches as well if the sun is shining and you wanted to make a day of it

Crikeyalmighty · 10/08/2025 13:47

Ah yes would add Norwich in too - love it

Judellie · 10/08/2025 14:34

If you're in Newcastle over the weekend, get the metro to Tynemouth and do the market - it's in the metro station itself, both days.
Also, there's a pedestrian tunnel, you can walk (or cycle) under the Tyne between Howdon and Jarrow (both have metro stations).
Or you can get the ferry (also part of the Tyne and Wear metro) between North and South Shields.
South Marine Park in South Shields is lovely with a little steam train and boats, and if you want you can then go across to Ocean Beach, the theme park - it's free to get in but obviously you have to pay for any rides etc.
North Shields has been upping its game lately too, lots of live music venues there now.

Belfast.

DeepLimeBird · 10/08/2025 15:52

Belfast, I love it

Leedsfan247 · 10/08/2025 17:52

Definitely York so many different things to do. The Minster, dungeons, ghost tours, the river, lots of restaurant's, walk the city wall. If you need it there’s a great outlet shopping centre outside of the city.
IMO Oxford is overrated (very anti car) Canterbury is prettier and cheaper.

mamagogo1 · 10/08/2025 17:57

I would actually say that nearly everywhere has enough entertainment for a weekend, even less obvious places like industrial towns and cities have history and culture. I’ve spent a couple of nights in places like Sunderland, Middlesbrough, even Wigan and been kept entertained and found out things i never knew , most places have a museum, statues, parkland etc and i research ahead where I can find live music etc

Parksinyork · 10/08/2025 17:58

JasmineTea11 · 10/08/2025 10:16

2 decent art galleries (The Laing & Baltic), couple of good museums. Music at The Glasshouse, gigs at various other interesting venues. There's a comedy club. Nice walk along the Tyne to Ouseburn, the hipsters spot. Jump on the metro to cute Whitley Bay, fish and chips by the sea. Go on cheesy / scary fairground rides, eat candy floss?! Plus Durham is literally 10 minutes on the train, you could check out the historic city centre in half a day.

You need to go to South Sheilds for fair ground rides as Whitley Bay doesn’t have any.

Belfast
hands down.

Really interesting city with fascinating history. Staggeringly beautiful and grand public buildings. A bit like Liverpool and Glasgow in that you can see the money that went through this city in the past.
Titanic museum one of the best I’ve been to.
Lots our tours of the city explaining the Troubles.
Friendly, fascinating people.
Day trip to Giant’s causeway to boot!

Mummadeze · 10/08/2025 18:07

I agree with Belfast, it’s such a fun place and people are so friendly. Manchester and Liverpool have to be great options too.

Weald56 · 10/08/2025 18:15

Newcastle is a great place to visit (and, no, I'm not a Geordie!)

Live fairly local as well , agree . It's turned into a dump sadly .

Agree it used to be quite pleasant but its awful
now.

Try Edinburgh, Glasgow, Oxford, Cambridge, Harrogate.
