A Greek island within easy reach of Athens

planning a last minute holiday to a Greek island this month.

Would love to hear your ideas or recommendations. Does anyone know somewhere that fits this bill?

looking for somewhere with beautiful beaches/ water
within easy reach of Athens ( up to 4 hours ferry)
nice relaxed vibe
an affordable, but decent hotel with pool in a small walkable town or village.
a few nice restaurants, but nothing OTT. Local restaurant vibe.

don’t want somewhere that we need to drive everywhere. Don’t want the hassle of finding somewhere to park etc. but also not keen on being somewhere and having to depend on taxis.

Want to be able to have a lazy, relaxed holiday- no sightseeing. Maybe couple of shops, or a cute harbour / town centre to potter around.

might do a day sail and some snorkelling. Paddle boarding would also be fun.

not looking for busy nightlife, but a couple of nice bars would be ideal

If you like to be really near the sea I recommend Hotel Brown on Aegina. You can walk to a different restaurant for every night of the week plus visit other islands from there too.

Hotel Brown is not open this year unfortunately, his daughter passed away 😔

Aegina is great if you want beautiful restaurants and great vibes but is hard to get to the beaches without a car. Although there is some swimming in town. Agistri is stunning too as is Poros and Hydra. You cannot go wrong with the Argo Saronic islands and as they are so close to each other you could spend a couple of days at each or base yourself at one and do some day trips!

Another vote for Aegina

Or you could just drive down to the Peloponnese from Athens, over the Corinth Canal. Lovely area.

Now I want to go to Hydra 😆🤣 >starts new list on tripadvisor<

Know as the Island of a Thousand Cats!

That’s so sad.

Skiathos or skelopos (the mamma Mia island) or Allonosis (?sp).

My dd recently traveled over these islands and said they’re all beautiful.

Thanks so much for all these replies.

i had been looking at Paros/ Hydra but have never been to either and its always hard to judge from hotel websites.

Will take a look at aegina and agistri as haven’t seen those pop up.

a pp mentioned Skiathos and it looks amazing, but think flights there really crank up the price. The ferry looked doable but think it’s a couple of hours drive from Athens which starts to feel a bit too much hassle.

we’ve got the flights to Athens already ( they were reasonably cheap) and reckoned a ferry might be fun!

You can fly with easy jet to Skiathos and it’s definitely not 2 hours from Athens to the ferry.

The OP has Athens flights booked.

Naxos or Koufinisia

AdaColeman · 10/08/2025 10:00

Another vote for Poros, a very short easy journey from Athens.

Wow..looks amazing
